Dying Light: Volatile Virus

Chapter 20: Following

You get on the window of the laboratory of the Tower, but before leaving, you get ready, and then jump, while yelling a loud Volatile growl.

Quickly, you start jumping through roofs of the Slums, trying to find the trail of Crane.

Some hours pass, but there's no luck. You continue, still trying to find anywhere the red trail, but still nothing.

Until finally, after so long time, you see in the very long far away distance, a red fade sparkle. Excited, you impulse yourself with strength, reaching to surpass multiple roofs with a high jump at high speed, while you yell a loud Volatile growl of excitement.

After a moment, you reach where you saw the red fade sparkle, and see a red fade trail, almost barely visible, as it was days ago Crane traveled outside Harran. So you quickly start running, chasing Crane once again.

As you continue, you enter the sewers, but while you continue following the red trail, as is also slowly slightly more visible as you continue following it, some Volatiles appear. You wonder why they suddenly appear, but you continue, while they seem to follow you.

After a big while, you reach out, reaching the end of the path, leaving Harran behind, and seeing the exit was to a part of a mountain. The view is very lifelike, all the grass and green, all the color in the view... Is a view you didn't saw before, and much less aside Harran by how it is at the moment. It was the completely opposite view, but yet, this place wasn't neither clean from the virus.

You start walking to outside, but instantly, the sunlight slowly starts overwhelming you. The sky in the countryside is much cleaner than in Harran, since it is a city.

You feel your body's absorption overwhelmed, as is too much, but yet, you embrace it, while your veins start to glow golden, and then, shiny golden, with a bright light glowing that makes the symbol of the Sun's mask on your vest glow with high intensity.

The Volatiles try to continue following you, but the second they get impacted by the sun, their skin started burning slightly.

You turn around, and grabbed the injector, and then, injected on yourself, but instead of injecting, the injector grabbed blood from you.

After obtaining blood from yourself, you inject your blood on them.

Number of Volatiles Following:

There are four Volatiles following you, each slightly different in appearance, showcasing minor individual traits like claw sharpness, skin tone variations, or muscular builds. They all show signs of hesitation, as the sunlight is already burning their skin, causing steam to rise and patches to char.

Post-Injection Reactions:

Volatile 1 (Lean and Agile):

Appearance: Its frame is slender, built for speed. After the injection, its glowing blue veins shift to a faint gold hue, and its skin thickens slightly, taking on a dull golden tint.

Mutation: Gains the ability to resist sunlight moderately, but it doesn't fully embrace the mutation. Its movements become slightly slower due to a denser musculature, but it remains functional in daylight without immediate burning.

Volatile 2 (Muscular and Hefty):

Appearance: This Volatile was larger and more tank-like. After the injection, its veins glow a deeper gold, and its skin becomes a metallic golden hue with subtle ridges along its shoulders and back, resembling plated armor.

Mutation: It mutates drastically, becoming stronger and bulkier, almost resembling a living fortress. However, it struggles to move quickly under the sunlight, relying on brute strength and defense.

Volatile 3 (Average Build):

Appearance: A standard Volatile with no distinct pre-existing traits. Post-injection, its skin becomes pale with golden streaks along its arms and legs, and its glowing golden veins pulse rhythmically.

Mutation: It adapts well, fully absorbing the sunlight and transforming into a more balanced creature. It retains its speed and strength while gaining full sunlight resistance, making it the most functional under daylight.

Volatile 4 (Smaller and Weak):

Appearance: This Volatile was already weaker, with scars and visible signs of malnourishment. After the injection, its body rejects the mutation entirely, causing its veins to burst and its skin to darken. It collapses and convulses, emitting smoke as the sunlight fully consumes it.

Mutation: None—this Volatile doesn't survive the injection.

Summary of Results:

Two Volatiles (1 and 3) gain moderate to full sunlight resistance, able to follow you under the sun.

One Volatile (2) becomes a slow-moving tank, heavily armored but less effective in pursuit.

One Volatile (4) fails to adapt and perishes, showing that not all Volatiles can endure such a drastic mutation process.

The surviving Volatiles look to you with a newfound reverence, almost as if instinctively recognizing you as their "evolutionary guide."

-"... Use this I gave you, and create stronger nests... Lets make sure we continue adapting and evolving... Some will die, but is the price of the process sadly... Let's make the difference... When I come back... Everything will change..."

You turn back again, and start going. The Volatiles doesn't follow you anymore, but they take the body of the one who died, and they go back.

After a moment, you reach to get inside the new zone. Everything is open, no buildings, just field with crops, and nature. What a village really is.
