Chapter 52: The Ashen Beast
With a roar, she released her flames, the golden light engulfing the illusion. The figures screamed, their forms disintegrating into ash, their voices silenced at last. The oppressive weight in the air lifted, leaving Yukari standing alone in the clearing, her chest heaving and flames still crackling around her hands.
But the relief was short-lived.
The ashes did not scatter as they should have. Instead, they hung in the air, swirling unnaturally, as though guided by an unseen force. A chill ran down Yukari's spine as the ashes began to coalesce, forming a shape that was neither human nor beast.
"What now?" she muttered, stepping back, her fingers igniting instinctively.
The swirling mass of ash solidified, taking on grotesque features. A head emerged first, jagged and angular, with hollow eye sockets that burned with a sickly, green glow. Its mouth stretched unnaturally wide, filled with jagged, blackened teeth. The body that followed was a patchwork of limbs—too many arms, ending in twisted claws, and legs bent at impossible angles. The creature towered over Yukari, its form constantly shifting as though it could barely contain its own existence.
A deep, guttural growl escaped the beast, shaking the ground beneath Yukari's feet. Its voice echoed, layered with countless tones that sounded like the villagers she had just banished.
"You cannot escape your sins," it rumbled. "We are your burden to bear."
Yukari clenched her fists, forcing herself to stand her ground despite the terror clawing at her chest. "I already told you," she said, her voice sharp, "I'm done with you."
The beast roared in response, lunging toward her with terrifying speed. Yukari barely had time to dive to the side, rolling to her feet as its claws gouged deep trenches in the earth where she had stood moments before.
She thrust her hands forward, releasing a wave of golden flames. The fire struck the beast head-on, lighting up the forest as it engulfed the creature. For a moment, it seemed as though she had won. But as the flames faded, the beast emerged unscathed, its shifting form absorbing the fire like water into sand.
"Great," Yukari muttered, sweat beading on her forehead. "So much for that idea."
The beast didn't wait for her to strategize. It charged again, swiping at her with its clawed arms. Yukari ducked under one strike and leaped over another, but the sheer size of the creature made dodging increasingly difficult. One of its claws grazed her side, sending her sprawling to the ground.
She gasped as pain flared through her ribs, but she forced herself to roll away before the beast could follow up with another attack. Stay calm, she thought, scrambling to her feet. Think. You've fought tougher things than this. Probably.
The beast loomed over her, its twisted, ash-formed limbs stretching unnaturally, ready to strike again. Yukari clenched her fists, golden flames flickering to life in her palms. This creature wasn't going to go down easily, but she wasn't about to let it win.
"Alright, big guy," she muttered. "Let's see how you like this!"
With a sharp motion, Yukari flung a sphere of golden fire straight at the creature. The Dawn's Flash technique exploded on impact, creating a shockwave of radiant flames that lit up the dark forest. The beast staggered back, parts of its ash-covered form dissolving into the air.
It howled, a cacophony of voices blending into a chilling wail.
"Got your attention, didn't I?" Yukari grinned, but the moment was short-lived. The beast reformed quickly, its wounds sealing as if her attack had only been an inconvenience.
The creature lunged, claws slicing through the air with lethal precision. Yukari threw up her hands, summoning her next defense.
Golden fire erupted in front of her, forming a radiant barrier that absorbed the impact of the beast's strike. Sparks flew as the shield held firm, pushing the creature back momentarily.
Yukari's breathing was heavy, but she pushed forward. She couldn't afford to let it regain control of the fight. Her hands gripped the air, summoning her next weapon.
From her flames, a sword materialized its blade glowing a fierce gold, like molten sunlight. Yukari charged, slashing at the beast with precision and power. The blade sliced through its form, each strike leaving golden embers behind.
The beast roared, retaliating with a swipe of its massive claws. Yukari ducked under the attack, pivoting to strike at its legs. Her blade connected, and the beast toppled briefly before regaining its balance.
Despite her efforts, the battle wasn't turning in her favor. The creature's regenerative abilities made it nearly impossible to deal any lasting damage. Sweat dripped down her face as she retreated, panting.
"I need to hit it harder," she muttered, glancing at the surrounding terrain. The forest was dense, the shadows stretching ominously under the flickering light of her flames.
As the beast stalked toward her, she planted her feet and raised her arms. This time, she reached deeper into her magic, summoning a more powerful technique.
A massive wall of roaring fire erupted between her and the creature, the intense heat distorting the air around it. The flames crackled violently, holding the beast at bay.
"Let's see you walk through that," Yukari said, catching her breath.
But the creature didn't walk through. Instead, it reared back, its hollow eyes glowing brighter. With a guttural roar, it unleashed a blast of green energy, tearing through the wall like paper.
"Oh, come on!" Yukari shouted as the shockwave sent her flying backward. She hit the ground hard, coughing as ash filled the air.
The beast charged through the dissipating flames, its movements faster and more aggressive. Yukari barely had time to roll out of the way as its claws slammed into the ground where she had been lying.
She scrambled to her feet, summoning another technique.
Yukari raised her hands, launching a barrage of flaming projectiles at the beast. The Rain of Fire pelted the creature, explosions ringing out with each hit. The beast faltered, parts of its form disintegrating under the relentless assault.
For a moment, Yukari thought she had gained the upper hand. But then the creature unleashed another unearthly roar, its body shifting and expanding. It grew larger, more grotesque, and more solid.
The green flames in its eyes burned brighter as it spoke again, its voice a chilling blend of many. "You cannot destroy what you fear. We are eternal."
Yukari's heart pounded. The beast was adapting to her attacks, becoming stronger with each blow. She gritted her teeth, her mind racing for a new strategy.
If I can't beat it with power alone, I need to outthink it.
The creature lunged again, and Yukari dodged, using the terrain to her advantage. She darted through the forest, weaving between trees to gain some distance. Her flames illuminated the darkened woods, but the shadows seemed to press in closer, as if they too were alive.
As she reached a clearing, the beast emerged, its hulking form casting an ominous shadow over her. Yukari's fingers ignited once more, but she hesitated.
This thing isn't just a monster. It's part of me.
The realization hit her like a punch to the gut. The beast wasn't something she could simply destroy—it was a manifestation of her fears, her guilt, and the pain she had buried deep inside.
She clenched her fists, her flames dimming slightly. "I don't know if I can beat you," she admitted, her voice trembling. "But I'm not going to stop trying."
The beast paused, as if considering her words. Then, with a deafening roar, it charged again.
Yukari stood her ground, summoning her final reserves of magic. Flames erupted around her, not just gold but red and white, swirling together in a storm of light and heat.
The clearing became a battlefield of fire and ash, the air thick with smoke and the sound of roaring flames. Yukari fought with everything she had, her attacks more ferocious and desperate. But the beast didn't falter.
As the battle raged on, Yukari's strength began to waver. Her flames grew weaker, her movements slower. She knew she couldn't keep this up much longer.
The beast lunged, and this time, its claws found their mark. Yukari cried out as she was thrown to the ground, pain radiating through her body.
Through the haze of pain, she looked up at the creature looming over her. Its hollow eyes glowed with triumph, its jagged mouth twisting into a cruel grin.
Yukari clenched her fists, her flames flickering weakly. "This isn't over," she whispered, even as darkness threatened to overtake her.
The beast raised its claw for the final blow, and Yukari braced herself.
