Chapter 54: Chapter 54
But just as the Chelsea fans were cheering, the sound quickly gave way to loud boos.
Stamford Bridge erupted with sharp jeers, so much so that if someone had just turned on their TV, they might have thought Chelsea was playing an away game.
This was surprising, given that Chelsea had just completed a quality shot on goal. Lampard, who had taken the shot, glanced at the stands with confusion. He knew the boos couldn't be directed at him—Chelsea fans held him in such high regard that even a completely off-target shot would have likely been met with applause.
Then Lampard noticed the stadium's big screen. Normally, it would replay the shot, but instead, the camera was focused on Luton's coach, Gao Bo. Standing on the sideline in a black coat, Gao Bo wore a calm expression, his hands in his pockets.
However, just before Lampard took the shot, Gao Bo had said something.
The audio wasn't captured, but Gao Bo's lip movements were unmistakable.
"F* Chelsea!"**
Lampard was stunned, and the fans in the stands went ballistic.
Lampard shot a sharp glance at Gao Bo. Any sympathy he had once felt for the Chinese coach evaporated instantly. He had heard of Gao Bo's past with Chelsea—how the coach was sacked despite leading their youth team to an FA Youth Cup victory. Lampard had felt some pity for him, but now? After this? Gao Bo was officially an enemy.
The boos reverberated throughout the stadium, drawing the attention of players on the pitch. Chelsea's players glared at Gao Bo with hostility, while Luton's players looked on with admiration.
Their boss had just cursed out Chelsea in their own stadium! For a coach to show such defiance here... that was bold.
In the stands, Luton owner David Morton was visibly uncomfortable. As an educated and composed American businessman, he found such behavior improper, even if it made the fans love Gao Bo more. Around him, Luton supporters erupted in celebration, turning Gao Bo's phrase into a chant. If not for the overwhelming boos from Chelsea fans, their chants would have incited even greater anger.
To Chelsea fans, it was an insult they couldn't tolerate.
---
"Coach Gao Bo appeared to make an offensive comment about Chelsea just now, which sent the stadium into an uproar," Letkinson said during the broadcast. "I can guarantee you he's now the most despised person among Chelsea supporters."
"Well, uh..." the Chinese commentator He Hongfa stumbled awkwardly. "It seems Coach Gao said something inappropriate. Kids watching at home, don't repeat what he said!"
The situation spiraled further as furious Chelsea fans began hurling insults—and objects—toward the Luton bench.
"F*** Chinese!"
"Get out of Stamford Bridge!"
"Don't let me see you in London!"
Crumpled newspapers, coins, and other small items rained down, though fans held onto their phones—likely recognizing their value.
Security personnel hurried to contain the situation, but Gao Bo remained calm. When a staff member advised him to move to a safer area, he simply sighed, wiping cold sweat from his forehead.
---
In truth, Gao Bo hadn't intended to provoke Chelsea. The comment had been prompted by a sudden task issued by his football card system:
[Task]: F* Chelsea!**
When the task appeared on his system interface, Gao Bo instinctively read it out loud without realizing he was being filmed. By the time he noticed the camera on him, it was too late to take it back.
The boos had only just begun to fade when Chelsea launched another attack.
---
But this time, their quick passing faltered.
Kanté, Luton's midfield dynamo, intercepted a pass from Deco with surgical precision. Thanks to a skill card that boosted his abilities, Kanté now played like a prime version of Makelele.
Chelsea's build-up play came to an abrupt halt as Kanté snatched the ball. Without hesitation, he passed it forward to Drinkwater, who positioned himself in a pocket of space.
The Luton players immediately spread out, transitioning from defense to attack with lightning speed.
Chelsea's high defensive line provided the perfect opportunity for a counterattack. Jamie Vardy had already started sprinting as soon as Kanté won the ball. The space behind Chelsea's defenders was ripe for exploitation.
As Vardy approached the last line of defense, Drinkwater delivered a perfectly-timed through ball, slicing through the gap between Ivanović and Alex.
"Vardy's pace!!!" gasped the commentators, as the striker accelerated like a bullet.
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech read the danger and rushed out to close the distance. Just as Vardy gained control of the ball, Čech launched himself forward and slid in to clear the ball out of play.
---
Luton had come close to drawing first blood at Stamford Bridge. Gao Bo, despite the hostile atmosphere around him, stayed focused on the match. The boos and flying objects no longer mattered. All that mattered was winning.
