Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Nahida
Greater Lord Rukkhadevata placed Nahida on her soft abdomen, gently stroking her from time to time. Little Nahida slept soundly, her long ears twitching occasionally, as if she couldn't stay still even in her dreams. Rukkhadevata marveled at her adorable new creation, but her mood soured as she glanced at Yu, lying like a dead fish next to her.
Yu felt utterly drained, his energy completely depleted. Unless someone invaded Sumeru, he had no intention of moving. Just as he allowed his exhaustion to lull him into stillness, a deafening explosion shattered the quiet night in Sumeru City.
Well, that got him moving.
He rose from the bed, stiffly grabbed a rope and a wooden cage, and trudged out the door. His target this time? Yet another mischievous long-eared troublemaker.
---
"Headmaster, I was wrong! I'll go to the confinement room myself!"
Yu felt a moment of satisfaction as Alice voluntarily surrendered, but his mood soured again when he remembered Little Blue.b The poor creature had accidentally consumed the antidote for the Blue Plague, turning its scales a vibrant pink. While Yu grudgingly admitted that pink was cute, the color was undeniably unsettling on a robust and intimidating drake—it was like looking at a muscular Barbie doll.
Rhinedottir hadn't yet finished her research on reverting the color. For now, Yu decided he'd just ride Little Green instead. But then he remembered his upcoming trip to Inazuma. Fine, pink it is.
Returning to his quarters, Yu discovered that Rukkhadevata and her daughter were still sprawled comfortably on his bed.
"If you dare wake your sister, I'll kill you!" Rukkhadevata growled.
Yu couldn't help feeling wronged. His mother was so biased! But Nahida was adorable, so for her sake, he decided to let it go. Instead, he dragged himself to the Akademiya's headmaster's office to sleep.
---
Just as Yu began to drift off, he felt something sneaking into his bed. He was far too tired to care. What could it possibly do—kill him?
The next morning, Yu awoke to find a blonde-haired girl with gemstone-like eyes lying beside him. Her faint scent was sweet and refreshing. Without hesitation, Yu grabbed her by the scruff of her neck and tossed her into the Pool.
Brain not booted up… no response…
"Nice try, Rhinedottir," Yu muttered.
On his desk, he noticed a neatly written note with elegant handwriting:
"If you're reading this after tossing me out, just approve my funding already! 😢
What kind of person does this? You sleep with someone and then throw them out in the morning!😢"
Yu stared at the note, conflicted. Maybe he should approve her budget from two months ago? No, wait, he hadn't done anything! He crossed his arms. On second thought, he decided to withhold next month's budget too. Maybe even the month after that. Once he'd deducted a year's worth of funds, he'd give her one month back just for kicks.
What Yu didn't know was that after leaving his side, Rhinedottir would periodically send letters with pictures of Albedo attached, each accompanied by the words: Child Support!
Every holiday, she'd demand red envelopes or other forms of compensation, pulling off stunts that made it seem as though something truly scandalous had happened between her and Yu.
---
"Rhinedottir, you don't need to resort to such... morally questionable methods to get funding," Yu said, dragging the soaked culprit back into the office.
"But Headmaster, you've docked all my funds to pay off debts! I can't even afford food!"
"Don't try that with me. Meals in the cafeteria are free. Students have no issues eating."
"But the cafeteria ladies serve food like hourglasses—they spill half of it before it even reaches your plate. And the food tastes awful! It's a waste of ingredients!"
Yu's ears perked up at the mention of food waste. That was a crime in his eyes.
"Go on," he said, narrowing his eyes.
"It's like this, Headmaster: The cafeteria walls are plastered with slogans like Waste Not, Want Not and Clean Plate Initiative. But how are students supposed to finish their food when it tastes that bad? Isn't that the real waste?"
Yu frowned. This was troubling. Food waste was abhorrent. Perhaps it was time to investigate.
"I'll look into this issue myself. But first, let's discuss your problem."
Rhinedottir suddenly smiled slyly.
"Headmaster, you wouldn't want people to know you spent the night with a female student, would you? That wouldn't do wonders for your reputation."
Yu snorted, his expression turning cold. He reached out and pressed her head down, exuding an air of royal authority.
"Do you think I care? As king of this nation, who would dare question me if I chose to take a few concubines? Is there something immoral about that?"
Rhinedottir blinked, stunned by the sudden shift in Yu's demeanor. The typically gentle headmaster now radiated an overwhelming dominance. And strangely, it only made her more determined to secure her budget.
"Then… could I be one of them? With full funding, of course. And if we have a child, will there be extra support?"
Yu hoisted her by the scruff again, her clothes still damp from earlier.
"Wait, Headmaster! You wouldn't want people knowing you were at the Grand Bazaar watching dancers last night, would you?"
Yu froze. This girl was a stalker.
"I don't care," he retorted. "I've already said I wouldn't mind taking a few girls as concubines. Do you think I'd be ashamed of this? Wait—when did you even follow me? I didn't notice."
"I was just buying snacks at the Bazaar and happened to see you," Rhinedottir said, grinning. "Oh, and one more thing, Your Majesty. Would your subjects approve of a king with... let's say... a peculiar fondness for his mother? I mean, didn't Greater Lord spend the night in your chambers yesterday?"
"How do you know that?" Yu's grip tightened.
"Ow, ow! I just got lost while getting snacks and saw her enter your palace!"
Yu fell silent, unsure of how to respond without completely losing face.
Rhinedottir, however, interpreted his silence as confirmation.
---
Coincidentally, Rukkhadevata chose that moment to stroll by, holding Nahida in her arms. The young girl, nestled against her mother's ample softness, looked around curiously with wide, innocent eyes. Her long ears twitched occasionally as she observed Yu and Rhinedottir with fascination.
"Yu, what's going on here? Did Rhinedottir cause another scandal?" Rukkhadevata asked, raising an eyebrow.
Rhinedottir's jaw dropped. Seeing Rukkhadevata holding Nahida, she began to piece together an entirely different nar therative in her head.
Headmaster, so this is the kind of person you are!
