Godfather Owl: Guardian of Batman

Chapter 179: Godfather Owl: Guardian of Batman [179]

"I'm not optimistic."

Bruce shook his head as he continued writing in his notebook.

In contrast to his calm demeanor, Diana was growing increasingly agitated.

"Why are we still waiting here?"

She urged, "Two Descendants are right in front of us—why aren't we engaging them?"

From Diana's perspective, the odds were balanced.

Two against two.

Black Adam was a sorcerer, and so was Bruce.

The Sea Queen was an Atlantean, and Diana was an Amazon.

The matchups were clear—it was time to act.

Yet Bruce continued to hold her back, refusing to let her enter the fray. Diana's frustration mounted.

"I'm not stopping you from fighting!"

Bruce countered. "But are you sure those are the only two Descendants on the battlefield?"

"What do you mean?" Diana paused, puzzled.

"See for yourself."

Bruce pointed at the battlefield, which had transformed in mere moments.

Surrounded by the Seven Deadly Sins, Black Adam unleashed the full might of his divine power.

The darkened clouds descended further, blotting out the sun. Day turned into night.

On the other side, the Sea Queen had nearly drained the Meuse and Ourthe Rivers dry.

Columns of water writhed like raging dragons, twisting wildly in the air.

It was nothing short of apocalyptic.

The soldiers in the Fortress of Liège had retreated deep inside for shelter. Even the German troops had ceased their river crossing, falling back to avoid the growing chaos.

It seemed as though Black Adam and the Sea Queen were preparing for their ultimate clash.

But just as the battle was about to erupt, an unusual force intervened.

The grass covering the ground around the battlefield began to sprout, growing into lush green saplings at an unnatural speed.

Within seconds, the fortress was encircled by a dense forest.

The thick vegetation formed an impenetrable wall, a natural shield akin to the Ardennes Forest of southeastern Belgium.

Then, a towering humanoid figure emerged from the earth, its body covered in green foliage.

Its glowing red eyes burned with fury as it stepped onto the battlefield.

The Swamp Thing had arrived.

He had been lying dormant, waiting for this exact moment to intervene.

"You will destroy everything here!"

His voice rumbled like the ancient will of the Earth itself.

"Fight if you must, but you will not devastate this ecosystem!"

Though his words carried a stern warning, the Swamp Thing understood the enormity of the challenge before him.

Black Adam.

He and the Sea Queen represented England and France, respectively—nominally allies.

The balance of power shifted immediately. Even with the Seven Deadly Sins at his side, Black Adam now faced tremendous pressure.

The Sea Queen's Atlantean forces and the Swamp Thing's Green would not be easily overcome.

"Very well."

Black Adam abruptly withdrew his divine power.

"It seems this battle won't be decided today."

As his words fell, a bolt of lightning struck him from the sky.

When the flash subsided, Black Adam and the Seven Deadly Sins were gone.

The Sea Queen frowned, slowly retracting her powers as the rivers returned to their natural courses.

But—

"The ecosystem in those rivers has been utterly destroyed!"

The Swamp Thing turned his ire toward the Sea Queen, his voice filled with reproach.

"You can fight, but you must respect the lives in the water!"

"I don't need a lecture from you!" the Sea Queen shot back.

"We Atlanteans respect marine life more than anyone else!"

"And how do you define life?"

The Swamp Thing retorted. "Your last attack didn't just lift fish and shrimp into the air—it obliterated their environment entirely!"

"Enough of this nonsense, creature!"

The Sea Queen dismissed him with a scornful glare. Slinging her trident behind her, she turned to leave.

The Swamp Thing's red eyes bore into her retreating figure.

"You will pay for this," he growled.

"Say another word, and I'll kill you too."

Leaving this warning behind, the Sea Queen departed with her Atlantean army.

The first battle at the Fortress of Liège ended with Black Adam's retreat and the Germans' failure.

Whether Black Adam would return or seek a new battlefield, no one could say.

Neither the Swamp Thing nor the Sea Queen could stay here forever.

The war raged on.

---

Bruce lowered his binoculars, jotting down the abilities displayed by the Swamp Thing as it emerged onto the battlefield.

Diana, meanwhile, frowned deeply.

"How did you know someone else was hiding nearby?" she asked. "Did you see them?"

"No, I was just taking precautions."

Bruce shook his head.

"When the mantis stalks the cicada, the oriole waits behind. Being vigilant never hurts."

Despite his composed tone, Bruce wasn't feeling optimistic.

The Descendants' abilities were far from trivial. Even if he teamed up with Diana, facing two of them simultaneously would be an uphill battle.

Moreover, the war had just begun. These powerful figures were still probing one another's strength. The moment they sensed the tide turning against them, they would retreat.

Waiting for a perfect opportunity to swoop in was wishful thinking.

And—

"Diana, I don't know why, but I have this sinking feeling," Bruce admitted. "We're hiding in the shadows, hoping for a chance to strike. But there's someone else—someone even deeper in the shadows than we are."

It was the seventh Descendant.

If Bruce and Diana tangled with the other six, they risked leaving themselves vulnerable to this hidden player, who could swoop in and take advantage.

"That's why, Diana, I need your help with something," Bruce said decisively.

"What kind of help?" Diana asked, puzzled.

"I need to extract your memories."

Bruce's voice was firm. "If I can retrieve the memory of how the seventh person made their wish, I'll have a much better chance of identifying them."

"But I don't remember it," Diana said, regret coloring her tone. "Dreams are hazy to begin with. By the time I woke up, most of it was gone, especially the details."

"I know. That's why I'll extract it from your subconscious."

Bruce leaned closer, his tone deliberate.

"For this to work, you can't resist me at all. Your physiology is special. Even the slightest pushback could cause my magic to fail."

"So…"

Diana raised an eyebrow, starting to grasp his meaning. "You're saying I need to completely trust you?"

"Exactly."

Bruce nodded, choosing his words carefully.

"During the process, you'll need to let your guard down completely. It's the only way for the magic to succeed. I have no ulterior motives, I swear…"

Even as he spoke, Bruce doubted his ability to convince her.

Opening one's mind entirely to another person was an enormous risk—something he himself would never agree to.

If Diana refused, it would be understandable.

But to his surprise, she nodded immediately.

"That's all? I thought it would be something more complicated."

She smiled lightly.

"So, what do I need to do? Close my eyes?"

Her straightforwardness caught Bruce off guard.

"You're this willing to trust me?" he asked incredulously. "Aren't you worried I might... manipulate your thoughts or something?"

"You wouldn't do that."

Diana shook her head.

"I don't know why you're always so worried. I've trusted you completely for a while now."

Bruce was momentarily at a loss for words.

Maybe it was his own darker tendencies, but encountering Diana's openness felt almost... healing.

"Thank you for trusting me," Bruce said with a sigh. "Let's begin."

Diana leaned closer, closed her eyes, and relaxed completely, leaving herself utterly unguarded.

"Kiss her!" Kathoom whispered into Bruce's ear.

"Kiss her!" Zur-En-Arrh chimed in from the recesses of his mind.

"Raaahh!" Halley, the tiny Valtrax poking her head out of Kathoom's pouch, added her agreement.

All of them offered very reasonable suggestions.

Bruce ignored them all.

Instead, he simply raised the Elder Wand and extracted a single silver thread from Diana's mind—a memory of the dream.

He did nothing more.

A collective groan of disappointment echoed in his head.

Bruce pretended not to hear it.

Diana opened her eyes just in time to spot the little dragon poking her head out of Kathoom's chest pouch.

"Wow!"

Diana exclaimed.

"What's this?"

"My little protégé!" Kathoom puffed up proudly. "She lives in this pouch. Want to hold her?"

Diana was all too eager. She extended her hands, cradling the tiny dragon in her palms.

Harley, no larger than a hand, let out a soft puff of reddish smoke and then started giggling.

"This is your protégé?" Diana asked, confused. "But... she's a girl."

"Doesn't matter," Kathoom replied with a shrug. "Girls can be protégés too. I'm a very progressive owl."

While Diana's attention was captivated by Halley, Bruce began analyzing the extracted memory.

It didn't require anything elaborate. He'd grabbed a Pensieve from Professor Gael's office earlier, almost as an afterthought.

Dipping his face into the swirling silver memory, Bruce glimpsed the dream once more: the obsidian throne, the tar-like sludge rising from the abyss, and Diana's alabaster ankles gleaming against the dark backdrop.

It wasn't long before he heard the wishes being made.

There were indeed seven individuals.

The first six wishes aligned perfectly with the known Descendants.

The seventh, however, was different.

"I wish for power that can truly make the world equal—a power that can resist all oppression and eradicate every hierarchy."

"Such power would, naturally, be strong. Unstoppable."

Bruce yanked his face from the Pensieve, his eyes wide.

"I know who made the wish!"

He whispered, almost to himself. "I know who it is!"

Kathoom, whose soul was linked to Bruce's, had seen the memory as well.

The owl let out a knowing chuckle.

"Oh-ho!" Kathoom said, his tone sly. "I think I've gone one step further than you. I know exactly who was summoned by that wish."

A red wish could only summon one thing—a red hero.

A figure of unparalleled strength, justice, and selflessness.

"The Red Son," Kathoom declared.
