Chapter 70: Could you please Die? (1)
The sun struggled to break through the gray clouds, casting a somber light over an abandoned district.
Yuta tightened his grip on his katana.
"This is our first time working as a team," he said with a smile, glancing at Maki, Toge, and Panda.
"You shouldn't sound so excited," Maki shot back, arms crossed. "This isn't good news."
Yuta frowned, taken aback.
"Why not?"
"Because when they send us out in a group, it means things are bad," she said flatly. "The rate of cursed spirits appearing has skyrocketed lately."
Toge muttered, "Salmon."
Panda shrugged his massive plush shoulders.
"Basically, they're running out of people to handle this mess."
Yuta glanced at Panda, his brows still knitted in concern.
"Don't you think it's risky for you to be wandering around like this? What if someone sees you?"
Maki rolled her eyes and smacked the back of his head.
"Don't be an idiot. Who's going to believe in a talking panda?"
"Uh… I mean…" Yuta stammered, flustered.
"Whatever you're thinking, everyone else is probably thinking the same. Besides, the veil we're about to deploy will keep prying eyes out."
At that moment, a black van with tinted windows pulled up beside them. Mr. Ijichi stepped out, looking tense and clutching a map.
"Are you ready?"
They all nodded, their earlier banter giving way to seriousness.
Ijichi unfolded the map.
"This district has been fully evacuated. The residents reported strange phenomena, and our detectors confirmed the presence of high-grade curses, at least level four—maybe worse. Your job is to cleanse the area. If anything goes wrong, don't engage. Got it?"
"We'll handle it," Maki said, drawing her weapon.
Yuta glanced at his teammates and nodded in agreement.
Maki inspected her naginata while Toge kept his face inscrutable, and Panda adjusted the strap of his bag, looking oddly relaxed.
Ijichi handed them the map.
"I'll stay back with the van. If things get out of hand, remember: fall back. Don't try to play the hero."
"Don't worry," Panda quipped. "The one you need to keep an eye on is Yuta. He's got the 'tragic hero' vibe written all over him."
Yuta opened his mouth to protest, but Maki silenced him with a wave of her hand.
"Enough talk. Let's move."
The group set off.
The streets were eerily quiet, the windows of nearby buildings dulled by layers of dust. The air smelled strange—metallic and oppressive.
"It's like the whole district is dead," Yuta murmured.
Toge pointed to a shattered storefront window, its frame marred by deep claw marks.
"Bonito flakes…"
Maki nodded, her gaze sharp.
"Yeah. They're close."
A ripple passed through the air, like a silent, invisible shudder.
Panda halted abruptly.
"They know we're here."
A dark figure emerged at the far end of the street, its twisted limbs contorting like a living shadow.
Yuta immediately stepped into position beside Maki, while Toge and Panda took their places behind him.
"I'll take the first strike," Yuta said, raising his katana.
Maki smirked.
"Try not to embarrass yourself."
The creature lunged forward with a piercing shriek, its claws aimed straight at them. Yuta gritted his teeth, bracing for impact.
The katana sliced through the air, lighting up the gloomy street with a flash of silver.
But as the blade struck the creature's dark, viscous form, it dissolved into a thick mist and evaporated.
Yuta straightened, bewildered, his eyes scanning for the enemy.
"Behind you, idiot!" Maki shouted.
Yuta spun just in time to see a massive claw descending toward him. He instinctively raised his katana, blocking the strike, but the force sent him skidding backward, his shoes screeching against the cobblestones.
Toge lowered his collar with one hand and muttered,
"Blast."
The air erupted in a deafening explosion, slamming the creature into a crumbling wall. Maki didn't waste a second. She darted forward, her naginata gleaming under the pale daylight struggling to pierce the clouds. She moved with deadly precision, her blade carving through the air.
The creature screamed as it recoiled, but it was already too late. Maki's strike landed cleanly, leaving a wide, smoldering gash across what resembled its chest.
"There's more of them," Panda growled suddenly.
Maki froze, adjusting her glasses.
"We're surrounded," Yuta said, his voice taut.
As if to confirm his words, more figures emerged from the surrounding streets. One, two, three… soon, a dozen grotesque forms were slinking out of the shadows.
"Toge, you good to go?" Maki asked.
"Salmon," Toge replied with a firm nod.
Maki's eyes narrowed as the horde advanced. She gave Toge a brief signal, and he began preparing his attack, his fingers brushing his collar.
Maki charged first.
The leading creature, a gelatinous mass with elongated, whip-like arms, lashed out at her. In one fluid motion, she dodged and struck, severing one of its arms with a precise slash.
"Yuta, cover Panda!" she shouted.
Yuta nodded, falling into formation. Panda stood beside him, his massive arms raised defensively, ready for impact.
One of the creatures leapt at them. Despite his bulky frame, Panda moved with startling agility, intercepting the attack and smashing the monster with a heavy, thunderous punch. As the creature reeled, Yuta followed up, cutting diagonally with his katana.
Meanwhile, Maki continued carving through the swarm with relentless efficiency. But the more they felled, the more seemed to emerge.
That's when Toge stepped up. Pulling down his collar, his voice rang out with supernatural force:
"Explosion."
The word shook the ground beneath their feet. A shockwave ripped through the advancing horde, slamming their grotesque forms into crumbling walls. Smoke billowed into the air, and for a moment, an eerie silence hung over the battlefield.
Maki snapped her fingers, signaling decisively.
"We split up! Toge and I will handle this side. Yuta, you and Panda cover the north street."
Yuta hesitated for a moment, but Panda placed a heavy, reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"Don't sweat it. We've got this. Besides, you've got to show Maki you're not just some guy who swings a sword."
Yuta gave a firm nod, tightening his grip on his katana. Together, he and Panda sprinted toward the northern street while Maki and Toge charged in the opposite direction.
