Chapter 16: Shoto Todoroki & Denki Kaminari vs. Momo Yaoyorozu & Trafalgar Law
The basement corridor of the training building was eerily silent, save for the faint crackling of ice expanding across the walls, ceiling, and floor. The entire passage was encased in a crystalline shell, reflecting the pale light from overhead bulbs. The cold air bit at their skin, every breath visible as a faint puff of vapor.
Standing at one end of the frozen hallway were Momo Yaoyorozu and Trafalgar Law. Yaoyorozu's calculated gaze shifted between the opposing side of the corridor and her companion, who stood with a composed expression, his long sword sheathed at his side. Before them, Todoroki stood motionless, his body entombed in the very ice he had unleashed in his earlier attack.
Law glanced briefly at Yaoyorozu before fixing his attention on Todoroki's frozen form. "Well," he muttered, voice calm and measured, "that certainly didn't go as planned for him."
In a monitoring room located in another building, the rest of the Class 1-A students and All Might watched the battle unfold through several large screens. Mineta leaned forward in his seat, eyes wide with disbelief. "Todoroki's completely immobilized!" he exclaimed.
Kirishima scratched his head, visibly perplexed. "Is this for real? I thought Todoroki would dominate this match!"
But Bakugo's sharp voice cut through the chatter. "You idiots," he said, his tone steady and eyes locked on the screen. "It's not over yet."
All Might's booming laughter filled the room, drawing all eyes to him. His smile was both reassuring and challenging as he addressed the class. "What Bakugo-shonen says is true! This battle has only just begun!"
Back in the training building, on the upper floor, Kaminari stood near a mock rocket, looking out through a window. He tapped his fingers against the glass, clearly bored. "Man, this is lame," he muttered. "I wanted to be the one attacking, not stuck here defending some fake rocket."
Adjusting the earpiece communicator in his ear, Kaminari pressed a button, causing a faint crackle to resonate. "Todoroki," he called out, his tone impatient. "Any updates?"
From within his icy prison, Todoroki's reply came through the communicator, muffled and distorted by the layers of ice surrounding him. Kaminari frowned at the static-filled response but said nothing further.
Meanwhile, Law turned to Yaoyorozu, his voice as calm as ever. "I can't keep covering for you in a fight against him," he said. "I need you to locate the rocket."
Yaoyorozu hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Understood."
Suddenly, a crack echoed through the frozen corridor. Todoroki, his eyes narrowed in determination, ignited flames across his body. The heat was intense, instantly melting the ice surrounding him and the corridor walls. Steam filled the space, obscuring vision as the air hissed and boiled.
The dramatic transformation drew Yaoyorozu's and Law's attention immediately. Law wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, his expression serious. If he's using his fire now, this battle's about to take a sharp turn…
Yaoyorozu, equally mesmerized and terrified, stared at the sight before her. The flickering flames cast an almost divine glow around Todoroki, the steam adding an ethereal haze to his figure.
As the last of the ice melted, Todoroki stepped forward, his green and black eyes locked on his opponents. "You can't fight me, can you?" he said, his voice low but firm. "So you'll keep running, moving from one place to another like prey trying desperately not to be caught."
Law's lips curled into a faint smile. He raised his hand, two fingers pointed upward. "Room."
A blue, transparent sphere expanded rapidly around them, encompassing the entire corridor. Todoroki's brow furrowed, his expression hardening. "That trick won't work on me again," he growled.
Without hesitation, Todoroki slammed his foot into the water-covered floor, sending ice shooting outward in every direction. The liquid froze almost instantly, sharp spikes racing toward Law at alarming speed.
Law, undeterred, unsheathed his sword in one swift motion. "Shambles," he muttered, flicking his fingers.
In an instant, Yaoyorozu vanished from her spot beside him, reappearing on a different floor of the building. She stumbled slightly, looking around in confusion before murmuring, "Law's ability… That means I'm on another level now. Maybe the second or third floor."
Back in the corridor, massive shards of ice erupted toward Law. With a calm smile, he slashed forward, his blade cutting through the icy projectiles effortlessly.
Todoroki's confidence wavered for the first time as he felt a strange sensation in his left arm. Glancing down, he was shocked to see that it had been severed, though no blood flowed from the wound. His expression twisted into disbelief.
In the monitoring room, the students erupted into chaos. Uraraka clapped her hands over her mouth, her eyes wide with horror. Midoriya's eyes shook with visible distress, while Bakugo's mouth hung open in stunned silence. Even Hagakure's voice broke through, a rare scream of disbelief filling the room. All Might's usually confident demeanor was momentarily shaken as he stared at the screen.
"Todoroki," Kaminari's voice crackled through the communicator again, now more urgent. "Todoroki, do you hear me?! Answer me!"
Unaware of the chaos unfolding in the other parts of the building, Yaoyorozu ran through the second floor, her steps quick but uncertain.
Meanwhile, in the corridor, Law held Todoroki's severed arm in his hand, a calm smile on his face. "Yare yare," he said, tilting his head slightly. "Why do you look so panicked?"
