Chapter 79: The Monkey and the younger dreamer part 2
I woke up the next morning to a loud bang.
I jumped up, ran out of my tent and looked around, once I confirmed that there was no imminent danger, I began to perform my routine check.
My stomach hurt a little, maybe the cold of the night had affected me, or maybe the local food didn't agree with me.
I locked myself in the bathroom for almost an hour, and then headed out in search of the source of the noise.
There was no reason to rush, I knew what was about to happen just as I knew it was happening right now.
I yawned as I walked towards the sound, I found a crowd at the entrance of the village, the old warriors were armed, the children looked anxious and they all looked towards the distant horizon.
I pushed my way through the crowd, muttering "excuse me, I'm just passing by," until I came to a spot where I could see where the sound was coming from.
The scene in front of me could have been taken straight out of a myth. First, there was a massive beast. It was the strangest thing I had ever seen, and it had way too many legs coming out of its body. Even at this distance, it was colossal.
Too big for me to even imagine its actual size. It had to be at least five hundred meters from something.
It was a Behemoth, and it was writhing in agony. It was writhing and lashing out, sending up considerable waves of sand every time it moved.
The only reason we could still see it with all that sand in the air was because of how damn huge it was. If you saw a Behemoth circling around like this one was, you'd assume it was swatting a fly.
This was different, the Behemoth was covered in blood, and what's more, something was running across its back, every time it moved, a new huge wound appeared on the beast's massive back, dripping blood.
Someone was fighting this giant beast.
"Mommy" whispered a frightened child, clinging to his mother, the old warriors barely seemed to be breathing as they watched the battle.
The fight went on for a while, the writhing beast didn't make a sound, it just kept attacking, everyone could see the desperation in its movements, it was fighting for its life.
The battle ended just after noon, as the sun began to make its way towards the horizon, the Behemoth's twitching became more lethargic as it neared its death, even as it lay distraught, it continued to writhe where it lay, refusing to give up, its resistance didn't last long.
Suddenly it stopped struggling, stood up and walked slowly, as if trying to get away.
It was too late for that, but I guessed the Behemoth hadn't noticed that.
In the end, the Behemoth stretched out completely, stood up on all fours and...then let out a huge breath, and all the strength left its body, it fell back, as if to sit down, and then stopped moving completely.
The moment it fell, all the warriors clasped their fists and knelt, lowering their heads towards the dead Behemoth. I didn't follow suit, but just stood there feeling a little awkward, so I backed away to the back of the group.
The warriors remained in place, as if they were waiting for something.
Eventually the sand cleared, as the Behemoth's corpse came into view.
So did a figure approaching from the horizon, wearing layer upon layer of rags and carrying a large sword.
"A hero," someone said, one after another, other voices repeated the same word, clamoring for their attention.
"Hero..."
"Hero!"
"Hero!"
That's right, in this village they would revere as a hero anyone who killed a Behemoth, as the strongest of all warriors, just like the hero of the past who took down an out of control Behemoth and saved his village from ruin, the warriors of the village stood up and prepared to welcome him
The Behemoth wasn't threatening the village or anything this time, but no one cared about that, as for the warriors, they would treat as a hero any warrior who could defeat a Behemoth, however, when the figure came to us, he ignored the waiting warriors, stepped through them and went straight to me.
"That wasn't the lord" he said
"No?" I asked
"No, the lord is much bigger" he replied
Ooh, that's creepy to think about, so that was a dwarf? My sense of perspective is very confused.
He was right, that wasn't the lord, when this guy fought the lord, or so I heard, the battle would last ten days, with our hero walking across the boundary between life and death.
"Still, thank you, your advice allowed me to kill a Behemoth" he said
"You're welcome" I replied
"Now, what was the even better story you had for me?" he said, his gaze intensifying.
"Yeah, about that, you want to be a hero, right kid? Do you want to be even bigger than this other great hero?" I asked.
"I don't want to, I'm going to be" he said
"My goodness, don't you think you're doing everything wrong?" I said
"What do you mean, everything wrong?" He muttered
"You see, kid, right now you're copying the things this great hero did, right? Killing dragons, killing Behemoths and stuff" I explained
"Yeah, if I can't catch up to what he did, no one will bother talking about me" he replied
"Listen, if you think about it, you're not going to become a hero like that" I said
"Well, I guess not..." he muttered again looking down.
He had defeated a Behemoth, and within this village, anyone who defeated a Behemoth was considered and revered as a hero, but the village was hardly in danger and the Behemoth hadn't done anything to hurt them, all the poor beast had done was get killed, it was hard to value the fact that he hunted monsters for pleasure, that wasn't heroic.
That's why I was going to show him the way to become a true hero.
"Have you heard of the Superd tribe?" I asked.
"Yeah, it's a race of devils, right? They say that during the Laplace War, the Superds killed both friends and enemies," he said.
"Some survived," I said.
"Where?" he demanded.
"Control yourself a bit, buddy, let me finish. You see, there are some guys out there who are even worse than the Superds," I said.
"Someone... worse?" he asked.
"Of course, and one of these guys is like the root of all evil in the world, you know? Although I recognize that you'll have to hear his name first," I said.
"The second among the seven world powers, the Dragon God Orsted and the most recent Sword God," I said.
That caught his attention. To give myself an air of importance, I spread my arms and tilted my head looking at him.
"I suppose you've heard of him, right?" I asked.
I knew everything, what the boy was fighting for, who he was trying to surpass and what that someone did, and what he couldn't do, with that, it was easy to provoke him.
"He along with the Sword God turned the superd tribe into his followers, and now they are granting them their protection" I said
"The Dragon God is not evil, he is one of the heroes who defeated the Demon God Laplace, rather, he and the superd tribe should be enemies and Gull Farion only remains in the sacred land of the sword" he said
"You are talking about the Dragon God from many generations ago right? Time changes and people become stupid, right? Besides, Gull Farion is no longer the Sword God since a year ago" I said
"I see... so that happened" he muttered.
"But that's where you're different, you're trying to surpass the previous generations. I think that part of you is admirable," I said.
The boy had gone completely silent. Despite being a talkative guy, he was now silent.
That was a clear sign that he had understood what I had said and that he was seriously considering it.
"You can kill the last of the Superd tribe and defeat Orsted and the new Sword God," I continued. "After that, you'll be a hero for all eternity, not to mention that you'll also be second among the seven world powers," I said.
There was no response.
"But being great doesn't make you invincible and irreplaceable. Everyone who got a heroic story written about them had someone they were never able to beat. Do you know why? Because they never had the chance!" I said in a solemn tone.
The boy's eyes opened wide
"You now have the chance, the chance to be recognized more than anyone else in history, you may never get it again" I warned
The boy's mouth was tightly shut, he was staring at me intensely.
"Impossible, for many years no one has known the whereabouts of the Technique God or the Dragon God or the Demon God or the Fighting God, no one knows where Orsted is" he said.
"True, but I knew exactly where the Behemoth was," I said
"It wasn't the sir," he grumbled
"Hey, what do you want from me? The sir isn't coming here for another eighty years," I said
"Really? Thanks for telling me, then I'll be back in another eighty years," he said
"Well, eighty years in the future is still eighty years...don't you want to test your skills against Orsted? He's certified as the strongest in the world, much stronger than the God of Techniques, if that guy is still alive. He's been crushing the competition since the Laplace War, and you have the chance to challenge him," I said
He stared at me. There's no way this guy would have ever paid attention to me if I wasn't working for Hitogami. We could have passed each other at the Adventurer's Guild and he would have ignored me like you would a bush.
"Okay, so where's Orsted?" he asked
"I'll tell you, but there's one condition" I said
"I accept" he replied
"Hey wait! I haven't said what it is yet, have I? Don't be so hasty" I said
"A nobody like you would never give anything without first setting conditions for it" he said
"You're not wrong about that" I admitted
I was on top of the world, this guy I had admired since I was an adventurer was talking to me as an equal.
"It's nothing too difficult, there are two things, for now, you have to go to this place" I said and handed him a map.
"And once you get there, I'll tell you what you should do next. One more thing. If we ever meet, act like you don't know me. This is all top secret." I said.
"As for the second thing: there's someone my employer wants dead, a follower of Orsted, who isn't part of the Superd tribe. He'll definitely try to stop you if you get close to Orsted, so basically, I want you to take him out on the way." I said.
"Your employer?" he asked.
"Haven't you dreamed about him? This really mysterious guy who gives you advice."
"Yeah, I think I did have a dream like that, a long time ago... Do you follow his advice?" He asked
"Well, yes" I replied
"Well, what do you decide? I want a yes or a no" I said
"Obviously it's a yes" he said
"I don't like the idea of killing innocents, but, as they say, sometimes you have to get your hands dirty" he continued
"They say, huh? Then I'll take your word for it" he said
"Well, that's all, hurry up okay?" I said
"Very well, I'll leave immediately" he said and then he started walking.
The old desert warriors tried to stop him, but he paid them no attention and continued walking...one more
