Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Unwilling to Leave
"You are here, please come in." Facts have proven that the effectiveness of government agencies, whether at home or abroad, needs improvement. Even for Moses Adams's sake, two welfare agency staff from Boston came to Jiang Hai's manor when it was already dark.
Under the guidance of Moses Adams, they arrived at the gate of Jiang Hai's villa, parked the car, and the man and woman got out. Both were white. The woman appeared to be about 27 or 28 years old, still very beautiful, though not particularly young. The nasolabial folds next to her nose were a little deep. Her white skin and brown hair looked very American. The man, who appeared to be in his thirties, was also white. To be precise, there weren't many people of color in the Boston area, as this place was once a hotspot for racial discrimination.
However, over time, due to its status as a metropolitan area and academic center of the United States, with intervention from the U.S. government, it became a key area for rectifying discrimination. Even today, though the Boston area remains predominantly white, with many people of Irish descent, discrimination against people of color is gradually fading. Except for some elderly people who still cling to their original views, those in their thirties and forties have moderated their opinions.
But clearly, this man didn't seem to belong to this department, as he frowned when he saw Jiang Hai. He had been thinking that the owner of such a large manor would likely be a kind old white man, but instead, he was met with a young Asian man, which caused him to deduct some points from Jiang Hai in his mind.
Jiang Hai, however, didn't care about how they saw him. They could think whatever they wanted as long as they didn't show it. Jiang Hai wasn't a narrow-minded person, but if these people dared to show any disrespect in front of him, he wouldn't let them off easily.
"Hello, my name is Kelly Marie. This is my colleague, Carlos Barron. We are here to pick up the girls." Upon hearing Jiang Hai's words, the woman greeted him with a smile, and the man merely nodded before walking into the room at Jiang Hai's signal. As soon as they entered, they saw the Evelyn sisters sitting on the sofa watching TV. The sisters instantly became alert when they saw the two strangers.
"Hello. My name is Kelly; you can call me Sister Kelly. I'm here to pick you up now." Seeing the vigilance in the eyes of the two girls, the woman walked toward them, gesturing as she spoke.
But despite her smile, the two girls recoiled, unwilling to approach her.
Seeing their guarded reaction, the woman sighed. It seemed that it wouldn't be easy.
"Don't be afraid, I mean you no harm. You can't stay here forever, it will disturb others." She continued gesturing at the girls.
"No, we won't leave. We want to stay here. We can work for food..." Darlene Evelyn, the older sister, quickly signed back.
"No, you can't. You're too young now. If he hires you, it will harm him. Do you understand?" Before Darlene could finish signing, the woman interrupted, speaking seriously.
But the two girls remained unmoved. They simply shrank back, shaking their heads and waving their hands, indicating they were unwilling to leave. The woman continued to try persuading them, but the girls were resolute.
Jiang Hai and his friends stood there for half an hour. The woman kept trying to persuade the girls, but it was futile. The two girls were determined to stay. The man behind them couldn't take it anymore. He walked over, grabbed the two girls by the arms, and said,
"Why waste time talking to them? Just grab them. These two are determined to stay here. You can't persuade them to leave."
With that, the man pulled the two girls off the sofa.
The younger sister, Marian Evelyn, was almost scared out of her mind. She struggled fiercely, unwilling to be dragged away, while the older sister, Darlene Evelyn, also fought back, hitting the man's arm. Unfortunately, her strength wasn't enough to move him.
"Hey!" Seeing the man's rude actions, Jiang Hai instinctively took a step forward to stop him. But just as he did, Moses Adams stopped him.
"If you don't want them to stay, you can only watch them leave." Moses Adams looked at Jiang Hai and said seriously. After all, the man was only grabbing them; he hadn't done anything else yet. If Jiang Hai spoke out now, things could become more complicated. Hearing Moses's words, Jiang Hai hesitated for a moment.
He was naturally indecisive and often lacked a firm stance. Of course, once he made a decision, he would stick to it. But now, dealing with these two girls, Mei Tou, was troublesome for him, and he wasn't in a position to act.
"Ah, you little brat, you dare to bite me!" Just as Jiang Hai hesitated, Darlene lunged at the man. Realizing she couldn't overpower him or pry his hands apart, she resorted to her most effective weapon: her mouth. She bit the man's arm, making him release the girls in pain. Seeing the blood, the man grew enraged.
Looking down at Darlene, still stubbornly raising her head, he didn't think much and, in a fit of anger, raised his right hand to slap her.
Darlene, startled by the approaching slap, immediately closed her eyes and braced herself, but even so, she remained resolute, standing her ground.
"Huh..." The sound of the wind from the slap approached, but just before it landed, Darlene felt no pain. She opened her eyes and saw that the slap had stopped less than five centimeters from her face. A hand, not so large, had firmly grasped the man's wrist. The immense pressure made the man's hand tremble and his face flushed.
It didn't take much to figure out who the hand belonged to. The only person present capable of stopping that slap was Jiang Hai.
"Is this how you treat these children?" Jiang Hai's voice was cold.
Had it not been for him today, this child would have likely been slapped.
Looking at the two girls huddled together like frightened kittens, Jiang Hai's anger flared.
"Get out of here, yellow... yellow man. You're no better. Since you've decided to send them to a welfare institution, they're no longer your concern. Don't think I don't know you've brought so many deaf-mute girls here. What are you planning?" Hearing Jiang Hai's words, the man grinned and, in a fit of rage, shouted back at him. Fortunately, he stopped before finishing his offensive remark, or Jiang Hai would have made him regret it.
But his words still shocked Jiang Hai. He had brought these girls here out of genuine pity, with no malicious intent. He simply wanted to help them.
What the man said, however, deeply angered Jiang Hai. At that moment, his grip tightened, and he pulled the man outward, aiming to break his hand. The man had no way of freeing himself.
The pain left him disoriented, and in a moment of desperation, he kicked Jiang Hai. But Jiang Hai was faster, returning the kick and knocking the man off balance. The pain and soreness in his leg caused him to kneel, and staring into Jiang Hai's furious eyes, he had no choice but to scream.
"Please stop..."
"Mr. Jiang, calm down!" Kelly and Moses Adams shouted at Jiang Hai. Hearing their pleas, Jiang Hai's anger began to subside. He released his grip and kicked the man in the chest, sending him to the ground. The man coughed violently, unable to recover for a long time.
"Sir, don't you think you've gone too far?" The woman rushed over to check on her colleague's injuries. Although there were no internal injuries or broken bones, it was clear the man had been severely punished, especially his right wrist, which had turned purple and black. It would likely take at least ten days to two weeks for the pain to subside. Though there were no life-threatening injuries, the woman was furious and stood up to confront Jiang Hai.
"Too far? Why didn't you say that when he was about to hit them? Or are you used to treating these girls like this?" Jiang Hai retorted, his brow furrowed as he glared at the woman.
