Chapter 29: CHAPTER 29 - A Work in Progress
"This is just plain ugly!"
Hyuga Mirai blurted out his blunt opinion the moment she laid eyes on the healing talisman created by his shadow clone. The talisman was a massive square sheet of chakra-infused paper, nearly 40–50 centimeters on each side, covered in messy, scrawled beginner-level sealing script. In the center of the talisman was a bold "Yang" character, signifying that it contained Yang Release chakra.
"There's nothing I can do about it. Neither the Konoha Hospital nor the library has advanced sealing techniques. Without high-level seals, it's impossible to compress the talisman's size further. Without quality, I can only resort to quantity," the shadow clone lamented.
Sealing techniques do find their place in medical ninjutsu, and the Konoha Hospital did have some basic sealing scripts in its archives. However, advanced techniques required approval from the hospital director or joining specialized units like the Barrier Team or the Sealing Team.
Hyuga Mirai had only scratched the surface of sealing techniques, which meant she could only use this rudimentary knowledge to produce the healing talisman.
To extend the retention of Yang Release chakra, the shadow clone had incorporated 13 layers of beginner-level sealing scripts into the talisman. However, this resulted in the talisman's massive size, nearly half a meter wide. Still, this approach allowed the Yang Release chakra to remain effective for six minutes.
"Come on, try it out quickly! The chakra will dissipate once time runs out, and that would be a complete waste," the shadow clone urged.
"Don't pressure me into self-harm, clone," Mirai snapped, clicking her tongue. He then grabbed a kunai and cut a two-centimeter-long gash on her forearm.
Without hesitation, she pressed the rough prototype talisman onto the wound and formed a single-handed seal.
"Release!"
As the seal broke, Mirai immediately felt the surge of Yang Release chakra flowing from the talisman into his wound. Within moments, the energy stimulated rapid cellular regeneration, and his wound healed entirely.
Mirai touched the spot on his arm where the cut had been, evaluating the results. "It's exactly like Mystical Palm Technique. I'd call this initial trial a success."
The shadow clone shrugged. "I'm almost out of chakra. It's up to the original now."
With a puff of smoke, the clone dispersed, returning its chakra and memories to the original Hyuga Mirai. Immediately, Mirai's mind was filled with details of the past few days of experimentation. She began recording the findings, compiling a thorough summary report.
Apart from the development process of the healing talisman, the report also included a wealth of information on cell biology and genetics—knowledge extracted from the lifetime work of Genus. If Orochimaru had already begun researching Hashirama Cells, this report was bound to attract his attention.
In Konoha, Orochimaru was currently Mirai's best bet for collaboration. As long as he could offer him something of value, he would reciprocate. Moreover, Mirai wasn't just a random Genin; he carried the Hyuga name, which, while not on par with the legendary Sannin, was still significant enough to make Orochimaru tread carefully.
Mirai created another healing talisman and sought out Doctor Nakano.
"Doctor Nakano, please take me to the deputy director immediately!"
Nakano, noticing Mirai's anxious demeanor, grew pale at the thought of potential damage to the hospital's valuable equipment.
"Did… something break?" Nakano stammered.
"There's no time to explain! The deputy director should be back by now, right? Please take me to her!" Mirai urged.
Seeing Mirai's insistence, Nakano abandoned his stack of files and quickly led her upstairs.
The deputy director of Konoha Hospital was a medical Jonin in her thirties. In Tsunade's absence, she managed nearly the entire medical system of Konoha.
Nakano knocked on the door, and upon receiving permission, ushered Mirai inside.
Behind the desk sat a middle-aged kunoichi with her forehead protector tied around the sleeve of her right arm. She looked at them curiously.
"Nakano, what's this about?"
"Deputy Director Kimura, allow me to introduce you to Hyuga—ah!" Nakano's introduction was abruptly cut off as Mirai sliced his palm with a kunai.
The deputy director frowned. "What are you doing—"
Before she could finish, Mirai took out the massive talisman, covered in messy sealing script, and slapped it onto Nakano's bleeding hand.
"Release!"
With a single-handed seal, Mirai activated the talisman. Instantly, the Yang Release chakra surged into Nakano's wound. Within ten seconds, the cut was completely healed, leaving only traces of blood behind. Nakano's hand was as good as new.
"This is… Mystical Palm Technique?!" Nakano stared in disbelief at his hand. Just moments ago, there had been pain and a gash; now it was as though nothing had happened. Only Mystical Palm Technique could produce such results.
"Mirai, you've done it?!"
The deputy director furrowed her brow, clearly puzzled. "Nakano, what just happened? What did this Hyuga boy use on you?"
"Deputy Director, let me explain…"
Nakano recounted the events leading up to this moment, including Mirai's borrowing of the hospital's lab and the encounter in Tsunade's office. Mirai added detailed explanations regarding the healing talisman along the way.
"I see…" The deputy director appeared thoughtful. The logic seemed simple: if explosive tags could store Fire Release chakra on paper, why not use Yang Release chakra for medical purposes? It was a question that had somehow gone unasked until now.
"Mirai, could you create another talisman for demonstration?"
"Of course," Mirai agreed. "Solidifying chakra isn't particularly difficult—most medical Chunin can do it. But my sealing skills are too basic, so I had to layer multiple beginner-level seals to compensate…"
"That explains why the talisman is so large. I thought it was a necessity for Yang Release chakra…" the deputy director mused.
After a moment of deliberation, she turned to Mirai. "Mirai, I need a copy of your research report and another healing talisman. I'll report this to Lord Hokage immediately."
Mirai nodded but reminded her, "Deputy Director, the chakra in the talisman only lasts about six minutes. If Lord Hokage is to see it, you'll need to hurry."
The deputy director's expression grew serious. "Understood. I'll head to the Hokage's office as soon as I have it. Mirai, if this healing talisman can be refined, you'll have made a monumental contribution to Konoha!"
