Chapter 32: CHAPTER 32 - The Bet
Tsunade glanced at Hyuga Mirai and scoffed, "I didn't expect you to actually succeed, though it's just a rough draft."
From Tsunade's perspective, the methods used to create this treatment seal were not sophisticated; in fact, they were rather crude. However, the innovative approach behind it was undeniable. It was astounding that such a straightforward idea came from a boy who wasn't even ten years old.
"Thank you for the praise, Lady Tsunade," Hyuga Mirai replied, resorting to a generic response, unsure of what else to say.
Next to him, Deputy Director Kimura interjected, "Mirai-kun, the Hokage has ordered us to improve the treatment seal as quickly as possible. He also asked me to deliver some sealing technique scrolls to you, which I'll hand over shortly."
Hyuga Mirai's eyes lit up upon hearing this, though he maintained a calm demeanor. "Deputy Director, perfecting the treatment seal is relatively simple. All that's required is a ninja skilled in both sealing techniques and medical ninjutsu. If no such individual is available, I'll need ten days to learn the basics of sealing techniques myself."
"Ha! Kid, do you think sealing techniques are as easy as some C-rank jutsu? Ten days?" Tsunade said, her tone dripping with disbelief.
Kimura leaned in and softly reminded her, "Lady Tsunade, Mirai-kun learned the Mystical Palm Technique in less than ten days."
Tsunade froze. She had overlooked the fact that the boy in front of her was a prodigy. Mirai often spoke to her in a manner that felt mature, sometimes even condescending, which irked her. She had intended to give him a hard time, but Kimura's words brought her back to reality.
"So what if he's a genius? Sealing techniques are a completely different ballgame than medical ninjutsu," Tsunade muttered, her voice trailing off. She caught Mirai's composed gaze and felt a surge of irritation. Slamming her hand on the table, she barked, "Alright, kid, how about we make a bet? If you can't learn enough sealing techniques to improve the treatment seal within ten days, you'll run errands for me for half a month. But if you manage it, I'll let you consult me on sealing techniques whenever you want."
'Tsunade, you might as well sacrifice a family heirloom if you want to win this bet!'
Mirai thought to himself but kept his opinion to himself. He didn't mind the wager. Confident in his abilities, Mirai was determined to perfect the seal in just seven days. Having Tsunade as a resource for learning sealing techniques was an added bonus; after all, there were fewer than five people in Konoha who surpassed her in this field.
After some consideration, he gave a slight bow. "Thank you, Lady Tsunade, for the guidance."
"What's with that smug look? You think you've already won, don't you?" Tsunade growled, her frustration mounting at Mirai's calm demeanor. "If you lose, I'll make you run fifty trips to Konoha Tavern every day!"
Mirai refrained from provoking her further. Confident in his abilities, he saw no need to hesitate.
Shortly after, Kimura handed him a chest filled with scrolls on sealing techniques. Mirai took them and headed to his office, which Kimura had specifically arranged for him. Completing the treatment seal would likely earn Mirai a promotion to Medical Jonin.
The assessment for Medical Jonin was unique. It involved evaluations by the hospital's director and deputy director, who would then submit a report to the Third Hokage. Once approved, the promotion would be finalized.
However, Medical Jonin didn't hold as much sway in Konoha as combat-focused Jonin. Unless they achieved extraordinary battlefield accomplishments like Tsunade, their influence remained limited.
Inside his office, Mirai shut the door and began his study. "Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
With the bet in mind, Mirai created three shadow clones to quadruple his learning efficiency. Dividing the scrolls into four equal piles, he and his clones set to work.
The scrolls, ranging from beginner to intermediate and advanced levels, included annotations from members of the sealing corps, which made them highly useful for newcomers.
With Mirai's remarkable memory, he wasn't quite at the level of photographic recall but could memorize an entire scroll in two or three careful readings. In just over a day, he had committed all the scrolls to memory.
"Release!"
The memories from his three clones rushed into his mind, causing a brief, splitting headache. After a moment of adjustment, Mirai organized the influx of knowledge.
"So that's how it works. The structure of sealing symbols relies on the interplay between odd and even layers. Different chakra natures require corresponding configurations," he mused. Reviewing the knowledge in his mind, he began to grasp the intricacies of sealing techniques.
Thinking back to his rudimentary treatment seal, he couldn't help but cringe. "Stable, precise, and seamless execution. Advanced sealing techniques also require speed. If the first symbol begins to fade before the last is drawn, the seal will fail."
He knew he needed more practice to perfect the seal, ensuring the Yang Release chakra would function stably.
"Time for a test," he decided.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
With a puff of smoke, Mirai created a clone. Pressing his palm to the ground, he called out, "Four-Layered Binding Seal!"
Sixteen sealing symbols spread from his palm, forming a matrix that ensnared the clone.
"Wow, not bad, original me! You've already modified the binding formation. I can feel chakra—"
Before the clone could finish, the matrix vanished with a pop.
Mirai shook his head, reflecting on the failure. "Too simplistic. My chakra control meets the requirements, but stability is still an issue."
"You also know too few sealing techniques," the clone suggested. "These scrolls only covered basic applications, and you've mastered less than five full techniques."
"Maybe I should study the sealing symbols used in explosive tags or request additional scrolls," Mirai mused.
"That'll only work if you show results first. The higher-ups aren't exactly generous," he remarked wryly.
Determined to perfect the treatment seal quickly, Mirai planned to use it as leverage for further demands from Konoha. Meanwhile, he also intended to report his findings on genetic cell research, suspecting that Orochimaru might approach him once the news spread.
