Tale of a Hedonistic wizard

Chapter 397: Ghost of the past

Their laughter was interrupted by a subtle shift in the magical ambience. The floating lights dimmed slightly before brightening, signalling that the ceremony was about to begin.

Guests began moving toward the seating area, where rows of elegant chairs faced an altar that seemed to be crafted from living flowers and crystalline formations.

As Jaegar took his assigned seat in the front row, he couldn't help but notice that Fiona kept glancing at him. She stood with Leo at the front. There was a tension between the two of them that no one seemed to have noticed, her eyes yearned but it was hidden by her.

The ceremony itself was a blend of traditional rites and more modern elements that reflected the joining of old nobility with new money.

Leo, resplendent in his Paladin's robes, officiated the ceremony with a gravity that belied his relatively young age. As Pierre and Jennifer exchanged their vows, Jaegar found his mind drifting to his own Academy days, to the moments he had shared with Pierre that now seemed like scenes from someone else's life.

He remembered their first meeting in the Academy's vast hall.

Jennifer and Pierre had with him most of the time and how their lives changed once they became a couple. He was happy to see the two most important people of his life getting together.

The sound of applause brought Jaegar back to the present.

Pierre and Jennifer were now married, their hands bound together with a ribbon of pure magical energy that slowly absorbed into their skin, leaving a faint pattern that would fade over the next few days - a visible symbol of their union.

As the ceremony transitioned into the celebration, servants appeared with trays of drinks and delicacies. The magical barriers around the garden adjusted, creating areas of perfect temperature for both vigorous dancing and quiet conversation.

Jaegar found himself moving between groups, playing the role of the gracious imperial prince while navigating the complex social waters of nobility, old friends, and past relationships.

Parkar found him again as the afternoon wore on, this time with more details about his upcoming match. "It's going to be the game of the season," he said enthusiastically. "We're playing against the Northern Kingdoms' team. They've got this new striker who can kick a ball through solid stone."

"Sounds dangerous," Jaegar commented dryly.

"I wish you played with us. Ah! Those days in the academy, your power kicks, I can still see them whenever I try to remember them. You were such a great player."

Jaegar just smiled, sipping his wine.

As the celebration continued around them, Jaegar felt a tap on his shoulder. Turning, he found himself face to face with Pierre.

The newly married man looked happy and slightly anxious, the way people often do when navigating potentially awkward social situations.

Pierre turned to Parkar. "Thank you for coming, Parkar," Pierre said softly. "It means a lot."

Parkar managed a genuine smile. "How could I miss it? Not when the prince himself had come."

As the afternoon faded into the evening, the magical lights intensified to combat the growing darkness. The weather barrier now served to keep in warmth as well as keep out snow, creating a pocket of perpetual twilight in which the celebration continued.

Jaegar found himself actually enjoying the evening, the weight of his emotions temporarily lifted by the company of old friends and the general atmosphere of joy.

Yet as he watched Pierre and Jennifer share their first dance as a married couple, he couldn't help but think of the challenges that lay ahead. Tomorrow, the political realities will reassert themselves. Lorcan would still need to be confronted; the mysteries that had brought Jaegar back to the capital would still need to be solved.

But for now, in this magical garden where winter couldn't intrude, he allowed himself to simply be present in the moment. When Parkar dragged him onto the dance floor, insisting that even princes needed to "let loose sometimes," Jaegar didn't resist. As he spun among his old Academy friends, their laughter mixing with the magical music, he was reminded that even in the midst of political intrigue and personal vendettas, there was still room for joy.

The last echoes of laughter and music had faded from the grand estate, leaving behind a poignant silence that seemed to whisper of memories made and opportunities lost.

The wedding venue, which hours ago had been a swirling kaleidoscope of colours and movement, now stood still, frozen in time like a half-remembered dream.

Fiona found herself wandering through the remnants of the celebration, her fingers trailing lightly over the backs of empty chairs. Her emerald green gown, chosen with such care for her son's special day, now felt heavy on her shoulders, as if weighted down by the ghosts of the past that seemed to linger in every corner of the room.

As she moved, the soft rustle of her dress against the polished floor was the only sound, save for the distant murmur of the few remaining guests - all close family - gathered in small groups around the edges of the grand hall.

Her eyes, still bright despite the lateness of the hour, scanned the room restlessly as if searching for something she couldn't quite name.

And then she saw him.

Jaegar sat alone at a table near the windows, his strong profile silhouetted against the star-studded night sky beyond.

The sight of him, so familiar yet somehow always new, sent a jolt through Fiona's heart.

For a moment, she was transported back in time, to stolen moments and secret smiles, to a period in her life when she had rediscovered parts of herself she thought long lost.

Though it was only for a limited time, it was memorable for her. Right from the moment she saw him here, her emotions were all over the place. It had been a while since she saw last him, yet he seemed the same and also changed at the same time.
