Chapter 73: Volume 1 Chapter 73: Crocodile Man: Is That It?

As the massive creature carrying the caravan's cargo slowly rose, Surtr's voice rang out, "Crocodile man, I challenge you!"

The group of lizardfolk couldn't understand her language, but they certainly understood her actions.

In an instant, every lizardfolk present started giving Surtr and Garde strange looks.

A few years ago, when Garde had spent a couple of weeks in a lizardfolk village while searching for medicine for his mother, he had learned quite a bit about their customs.

So, he was utterly confused by Surtr's intentions.

"Miss Surtr, are you serious?" Garde asked, bewildered.

"Of course, I'm serious!" Surtr replied confidently. "I challenge you!"

"Do you know what happens if you lose?" Garde asked, trying to understand her.

"Of course, I..." Surtr began but then suddenly stopped, realizing something. "Wait, Crocodile man, you can speak my language?"

"This is the Sarkaz language. If you ever go to Kazdel, you'll find many people speaking it," Garde explained.

"Oh, so you're saying I'm Sarkaz?" Surtr asked, intrigued.

"If the horns on your head aren't just decorative..." Garde responded, a hint of humor in his tone.

Surtr folded her arms, now genuinely interested in the man before her.

Not only was he handsome, but he also seemed to know things about her.

Unfortunately, he was also a scoundrel!

"Enough chit-chat. I'll ask you more later. If you're ready, let's begin," Surtr said, brandishing her massive sword, which was taller than she was. "In honor of the knowledge you possess, I won't hit your face!"

"That's not the problem here..." Garde muttered, noticing that all the lizardfolk around them were watching with amused expressions.

Even the massive creature pulling the cart turned its head to watch.

The only one who seemed upset was Raya, the lizardfolk girl, but her anger was directed not at Garde, but at Surtr.

Garde thought about explaining the situation, but then he saw Surtr flash a confident smile at Raya before swinging her enchanted sword.

"Laevatain!" she shouted.

Boom!

A pillar of fire shot from Surtr's sword, blazing through the air and barely missing Garde as it passed by.

"Next time, I won't hold back!" Surtr declared proudly, lifting her chin while gripping her magical sword, Laevatain.

Garde, with a sigh of resignation, accepted her challenge.

"If you're serious about this..." Garde said as he lowered his stance, his eyes narrowing with focus.

Before Garde could make a move, the surrounding lizardfolk began to scatter.

"Quick, everyone, let's get some distance—Garde's getting serious!"

"That strange woman may not be much to look at, but I have to admire her courage."

"Ah, it's no wonder—Garde's always been a looker, after all."

The lizardfolk chatted among themselves, many of whom had known Garde from his previous time in their village.

They were well aware of his strength.

"Raya, don't get too close. That woman you rescued and her weapon seem strange. We need to be careful," warned Raya's older brother, Muccaka, as he pulled her to safety.

"But why is she doing this?" Raya asked, confused, as she watched Surtr square off against Garde. "I saved her!"

"Oh, my silly sister, not everyone is as kind-hearted as Garde. Sometimes, to survive, people do things that go against their nature," Muccaka explained.

"Is Surtr challenging Garde for survival?" Raya asked, still trying to make sense of the situation.

"Of course. The purpose of survival is to ensure the continuation of our kind. What could be more important than that?" Muccaka replied seriously, glancing at his wife beside him.

Raya finally understood what was happening. 'So that's what she meant earlier—she's trying to take Garde from me?'

Recalling Surtr's determined expression when she had come to her earlier, Raya's anger began to fade.

Unlike herself, Surtr had a less appealing figure, and it would be much harder for her to find a lizardfolk willing to marry her.

Perhaps that's why she was being so forward...

What had initially made her furious now seemed almost pitiable, and Raya couldn't help but wave in support. "Surtr, you can do it!"

Noticing Raya's gesture, Surtr straightened her back, convinced that Raya was cheering her on to punish this scoundrel.

Originally planning to go easy, Surtr now resolved to give it her all.

As soon as she made up her mind, Garde moved.

He didn't underestimate Surtr, despite her being shorter than his chest.

Her strength wasn't the issue—it was the power of the magical sword she wielded.

The heat from Surtr's massive sword seemed to drain the surrounding area of warmth, even though it was a scorching day.

The temperature kept dropping, all the heat being sucked into her sword.

Garde stayed still for a moment, then burst into action.

He leaped with enough force to leave a crater in the sandy ground, converting his massive strength into a sudden, explosive charge.

His speed wasn't extraordinary compared to most people in Terra, but the distance between him and Surtr was only a few meters—a gap he could close with a single leap.

In an instant, Garde's large form was right in front of Surtr.

She had no time to react, but it didn't matter—her sword, Laevatain, seemed to act on its own, swinging toward Garde with a mind of its own.

Boom!

Flames erupted.

A pillar of fire shot up less than half a meter from Garde, but his massive axe was just as quick.

As Laevatain sliced through the air toward him, Garde's axe descended, creating a shockwave that snuffed out the flames before they could even rise.

The fire split, avoiding Surtr but surging toward Garde without mercy.

Yet, Garde didn't flinch.

Thud!

Like a giant hammer hitting the ground, Garde's axe crashed down, driving Laevatain into the sand.

With his other hand, Garde grabbed Surtr, pinning her beneath him.

The crocodile man's menacing face loomed over Surtr, filling her vision as he grinned at her.

"Is that it?" he taunted, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
