Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Proposal
The days that followed were a blur of shifting moments, each one more distant than the last. For Lina, life had begun to feel like a series of quiet choices, each one taking her further away from Lumen. She couldn't deny the quiet ache that still lingered in her chest, a faint echo of the feelings she had once nurtured so carefully. But she had accepted the reality. Lumen had made his choice when he lied to her, when he allowed their fragile bond to fracture in silence. He had let her go, and she was left with no other option but to move forward.
That's when Jun had become more than just a distraction. He had become a steady presence in her life—someone who genuinely cared for her and wasn't afraid to show it. Over time, his words had begun to feel less like empty promises and more like something real. Something solid.
Jun was kind. He was thoughtful. And he wanted her in a way that Lumen never had. The decision to move forward with him was not born out of desperation, but out of necessity. Lina knew that it's hopeless to wait for someone who's already in love, someone who hadn't made the effort to truly understand her heart. Jun understood her, and though the spark wasn't the same, the warmth of his affection was enough to convince her that maybe, just maybe, it was time to let go of the past and build something new.
One afternoon, as they walked through the quiet campus grounds after class, Jun took her hand, his fingers wrapping around hers with a gentle certainty. The golden light of the setting sun cast long shadows on the path ahead of them, and for a moment, everything felt perfect. As if the world had fallen into place.
"Elara," Jun said softly, his voice steady but full of anticipation, "I know we haven't known each other that long, but I've been thinking about this a lot, and I need to ask you something. Something important."
Lina looked up at him, her heart beating a little faster. She had come to value his presence in her life, and his words held a weight that made her feel both cherished and understood. But even as she felt the pull of his affection, there was still a small part of her that hesitated. The memory of Lumen, the longing for something that could have been, flickered briefly in her mind. But it was fleeting, a shadow in the light of what was right in front of her.
Jun stopped walking, turning to face her fully. He took a deep breath, as though gathering his courage. Then, with a look that spoke of both nervousness and certainty, he asked the question that had been building in his heart for weeks.
"Elara, will you... be my girlfriend?... I want to be with you, to make you happy."
Her heart seemed to stop for a moment. She had known this was coming; the signs were there, in every small gesture, every word of affection. But now, faced with the reality of it, she felt a wave of emotion sweep over her. She knew that this was the moment where the path she had been on would shift forever. There was no turning back once she answered.
For a long moment, she looked into his eyes, her thoughts swirling. She knew that her heart wasn't racing for the same reasons as it had for Lumen. But that didn't mean she didn't care for Jun, or that she didn't appreciate the stability he offered. He had never made her feel uncertain, never left her waiting in limbo.
"I—" She took a breath, steadying herself. "Yes. I want to be with you, Jun."
It wasn't the kind of love that burned with the intensity of first feelings or the passion of unspoken desires. It was the kind of love that grew quietly over time, nurtured by trust and care. But it was love, and that was enough for Lina. It had to be.
Jun smiled, a look of relief and joy crossing his face. He pulled her into a warm embrace, his arms wrapping around her tightly. For a moment, the world felt still, as if time itself had paused to witness the choice she had made. And for the first time in a long while, Lina felt something solid beneath her, something that made her believe she had done the right thing.

Meanwhile, Lumen found himself increasingly distracted, though he couldn't pinpoint why. He had been working hard on his studies, focusing on his future, trying to get into the college he had always dreamed of. But there was a nagging feeling in the back of his mind—something he couldn't ignore.
It started with small things—seeing Lina and Jun together in the halls, talking and laughing as if they had known each other forever. Then it was the way she no longer reached out to him, no longer lingered after class. The distance between them seemed to grow with each passing day, and Lumen began to feel the creeping unease that had once been nothing more than a vague sense of something off, now beginning to settle into a sharp awareness.
As they weren't from the same class section anymore they didn't cross path easily.
One day, he ran into Lina after class, and it was as if the space between them had become a chasm. She looked up at him with that polite smile, the one she had worn ever since their conversation, and his stomach tightened.
"Hey, Mun," she greeted, her voice still warm but distant. She wasn't the same Lina he had known, the one who had once shared everything with him, who had understood him without words. Now, she was someone else—someone he didn't know how to reach anymore.
"Hey," he replied, forcing a smile. "How's everything?"
"Good," she said, her eyes flickering for a moment before she quickly added, "Jun and I are planning to grab coffee later. We've been talking about our plans for the summer."
Lumen's heart sank at the mention of Jun's name. It wasn't jealousy that gnawed at him—not in the way he might have expected. No, it was something else, something deeper. It was regret, mixed with a sense of loss. He realized, too late, that he had failed to act when it mattered most. And now, Lina had made her choice.
He forced himself to nod. "That sounds nice," he said, trying to keep his voice neutral, though his insides were anything but calm.
Lina smiled again, though it was smaller, more practiced this time. "Yeah. Anyway, I've got to run. I'll see you around, Mun."
She turned away, walking with a steady, unhurried pace. Lumen watched her go, his chest tightening with each step she took away from him. He had lost her, and nothing he could do would change that now.
---
That evening, Lina stood at her window, gazing out at the horizon as the sun dipped below the horizon. She hadn't heard from Lumen in days, and though she didn't regret her decision to move on, a small part of her still wondered what could have been. But the more she thought about it, the clearer the answer became. She had made the right choice. She had chosen stability, trust, and someone who was ready to give her what she needed.
And with that choice, she felt a sense of peace settle over her, even as the memory of Lumen, and the quiet ache of what might have been, lingered in the back of her mind.
