The Silence Of Lost Feelings

Chapter 9: Chapter 7: The Proposal (Lina’s Perspective)

The days had passed in a blur for Lina, each one feeling like a quiet affirmation that her choice was the right one. Jun was kind, thoughtful, and he had made it clear, with every gesture and every word, that he wanted to be with her. He cared for her in a way that felt different, yet equally comforting to the friendship she had shared with Lumen. She had moved on from the uncertainty, from the constant second-guessing, and embraced the possibility of something new.

But in the quiet moments, when she was alone with her thoughts, something lingered.

The memory of Mun's smile, of the way he had been so effortlessly himself around her, still flickered in the back of her mind. She couldn't deny that she missed their friendship, the ease with which they used to talk, the shared moments of laughter and connection. But that was before—before the lie, before the silence, before she had made the choice to move on.

And still, despite everything, there was that nagging feeling, like a faint echo that wouldn't quite fade.

She thought back to the day she had asked him who he liked. She could still remember the way his face had faltered, the way his eyes had shifted, as if he was struggling to decide whether to tell her the truth or keep pretending. And when he had lied—saying he liked a senior—something inside her had broken, though she hadn't let it show. She had kept her composure, masked the pain with a smile, and moved on as if it didn't matter. But it did. It had mattered so much, more than she had realized at the time.

She had wanted to believe that Lumen would eventually see her for who she was—that he would finally find the courage to admit what they both felt. But the truth was, he never did. And that was when she realized that she couldn't wait anymore.

She couldn't keep holding onto something that wasn't real.

Jun had made her feel seen, understood. He had made her feel like someone who mattered, not someone who was waiting in the wings for something that would never happen. And so, when Jun had asked her to be with him, to take that next step together, Lina had said yes. It wasn't a decision made lightly. She had thought about it long and hard. But when the question had come, there was a quiet certainty in her heart that it was the right path.

Still, even with that decision, the absence of Lumen's presence in her life felt... hollow. She didn't regret choosing Jun, but there was something about Mun that lingered.

She had spent so much time wondering what could have been, trying to decipher Lumen's silence, trying to read between the lines of every word he said. But now, standing with Jun—feeling the warmth of his affection, his steady presence beside her—she understood what it meant to be loved openly. She wasn't a question mark in his eyes. She wasn't left wondering where she stood. She was seen, truly seen.

The reality of that truth was what made her choice easier, even if it didn't erase all the memories of Lumen. She had to let go of the idea of them, of the what-ifs and the could-have-beens. She had to stop imagining a future that was built on hope and silence and start building one that was rooted in something real.

Yet, as the days passed, the smallest things—like the way Lumen would look at her when they crossed paths in the hallways, or the quiet distance that had settled between them—reminded her of the loss. She knew that he was struggling, though he never said a word. Lumen had never been the type to express his emotions openly, and she could tell by the way he avoided looking at her that he was in his own battle. But she couldn't help him with that anymore.

The decision had been made.

She had to stop waiting for something that wasn't coming.

Lina and Jun had spent more time together lately, talking about their plans for the summer and the future. She found herself opening up in ways she hadn't with Lumen—perhaps because it felt like the right time, or perhaps because Jun had a way of making her feel safe. There was a sense of peace in their interactions that she had longed for, and it was comforting to feel the certainty that came with knowing where she stood.

But even then, as she sat with Jun on the grass one afternoon, his hand gently resting on hers, she couldn't help but wonder about Lumen. Not about what might have been, but about what he was feeling. The silence between them had grown so thick, so tangible, that it was almost as if their paths had diverged completely.

"Do you ever think about him?" Jun asked one day, his voice soft as they walked together down the quiet path near the school's gardens. He wasn't asking out of jealousy, but out of a gentle curiosity. He knew that Lina and Lumen had shared something special, even if that something hadn't turned into the love they had both once hoped for.

Lina paused, her steps slowing as she considered the question. The truth was, she had thought about Lumen a lot, more than she cared to admit. The memories, the moments they had shared, would always be a part of her. But the pain, the uncertainty, the lies—it was time to move past them.

"I do," she said quietly, her gaze drifting towards the sky. "But I think it's time to let go of that. Lumen and I... we weren't meant to be anything more than what we were. I've made my peace with that."

Jun nodded, his expression understanding. He didn't pressure her to explain further, didn't ask for more than she was willing to give. He simply squeezed her hand, a gesture that was warm and reassuring.

And for the first time in a long time, Lina realized that it was okay to let go. She had made the right choice. She had chosen herself, chosen someone who was ready to be there for her in the ways that mattered most. The silence that had once been filled with longing, with unspoken words, was now filled with something else: the calm acceptance that she had made the best decision for her own heart.

As she and Jun continued to walk, side by side, Lina knew that she had moved forward. And while the echoes of her past might linger, she was finally ready to build a future, one where she didn't have to wonder if the person she cared about would ever truly see her.
