Tried to Kill Myself, Ended Up In the Last Place I Expected

Chapter 2: Fate plays Twister

The air is dry. The overhead florescent lights are harsh. Phones are ringing and the number of people in the waiting room is increasing. Unfortunately, they'll have to wait even longer as a group of paramedics burst through the sliding doors wheeling in a heavily drenched, unconscious women with a Bag-valve mask strapped onto her face. Her eyeballs were moving rapidly under her lids.

The stretcher she's on is rolled through the emergency department doors and into the operating theatre. The surgeons get to working on her immediately. Thankfully, she was not in danger of death as her heartbeat was stable.

The young woman, aged only 27 had tried to commit suicide by jumping off the River Valley bridge. She had drowned, sustaining a broken femur, a fractured elbow and a concussion in the process. A paramedic on the scene had given her CPR and roused her, but she'd quickly slipped away again.

Thankfully, there were no life-threatening injuries and the woman would make a full recovery.

But was that a good thing? This question rang in the minds of the ones who had saved her. They saved a woman who had intended to end her life. So when she woke up, would she be grateful or would she just resent her saviors and try to take her life a second time?

Hopefully, the near brush with death had made a powerful impact on her psyche. Maybe she would have a new perspective and realize that she wanted to live. That whatever she had deemed unbearable enough to try to end her life over, would not seem so bad after having gone through such a harrowing ordeal.

Hopefully, thought one of the officers who had watched divers pull her to safety. It was a terrible thing for someone to want to end their life.

Especially, a young, able bodied individual who had not even lived out half their lifespan.

----

In another hospital, in the upscale part of town, the patient was unconscious in bed with a ventilator strapped to his face. He had an IV drip and was only alive because his manager managed to Narcan him in time. The room was opulent, as expected of those granted access to the VIP section.

But outside his room, the air was still fraught with tension. Relief had spread. But no one was happy. Only an hour ago, and for over three hours, no one had dared to speak. They had just waited and prayed. All were in complete shock that the filial son would do such a thing.

He'd told everyone he was kicking his addiction. How dare he lie and play them for fools?

Some had prayed out of love, for him to be saved. Others had prayed out of greed.

It was hard to know which God had answered their prayer. Maybe both.

But now that they knew he would live, they were all waiting for him to wake up.

Some with the temperament of a bull about to rampage.

Back inside the VIP room, the only sound that could be heard was of the ventilator and the patient's deep breathing.

Though he was in stable condition, he wasn't out of the danger zone yet.

Apart from his physical wellbeing, a far greater battle awaited him.

For both of them.

Miles apart.

Different genders.

Different socio-economic status.

He has parents. She's an orphan.

He's succeeded in life. She's been underachieving.

But both wish to escape.

Where to?

The mysticism of fate is one which plays twister with the lives of everyone. They made a heartfelt wish and now fate would deliver them.

She needs to be seen.

He yearns to hide.

What a perfect exchange.
