Chapter 11: THE BLOOD SEAL
The road to the Ruins of Klynos was treacherous. What had once been a bustling outpost centuries ago was now an overgrown wasteland, hidden deep within the forests beyond Ravenmoor. Legends spoke of Klynos as a place cursed by the gods, its people punished for delving too far into forbidden knowledge. Caleb and Theo knew little of what to expect, but Vane's warning lingered in their minds: The Blood Seal is not guarded by men, but by something far worse.
They trekked through the dense forest in silence, the undergrowth crunching beneath their boots. The Heart of Ember and the Veil stone Shard pulsed faintly in Caleb's bag, their energies clashing with the malevolent aura of the Mask of Midnight. Each step felt heavier, the weight of the artifacts and their purpose pressing down on him.
Theo broke the silence first. "You've been quiet. The mask bothering you again?"
Caleb hesitated before nodding. "It's… louder. Ever since we got the Shard, it's been harder to block out."
Theo glanced at him, concern flickering in his eyes. "You need to hold it together, Caleb. We're almost there."
"I know," Caleb said, though his voice lacked conviction.
They reached the outskirts of the ruins by nightfall. The remains of Klynos rose from the forest like jagged teeth broken towers and crumbling walls, half consumed by nature. A heavy mist clung to the ground, and the air was thick with the scent of decay.
"Charming," Theo muttered, his hand resting on his knife. "Vane didn't mention how creepy this place would be."
Caleb pulled out the Heart of Ember, its light cutting through the fog. "The Blood Seal should be in the temple at the center of the ruins."
Theo frowned. "Let me guess: it won't just be sitting there waiting for us."
"Probably not," Caleb admitted.
They moved cautiously through the ruins, their footsteps muffled by the damp earth. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant call of an animal. Caleb's grip on the Heart of Ember tightened as they approached the templea massive, dome shaped structure with its roof partially caved in.
The entrance was marked by a pair of stone statues, their features eroded by time. They resembled warriors, their faces twisted in expressions of agony. Caleb paused, unease prickling at the back of his neck.
"The Blood Seal's inside," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Theo glanced at the statues. "And so is whatever's guarding it."
The interior of the temple was dark, save for the faint glow of the Heart of Ember. The walls were covered in faded carvings, depicting scenes of rituals and sacrifices. At the center of the chamber was an altar, and atop it lay the Blood Seal a small, crimson orb that seemed to pulse like a beating heart. Its light bathed the room in an eerie red glow.
"We found it," Theo said, his voice low.
But Caleb wasn't listening. His attention was drawn to the carvings on the walls. They depicted figures kneeling before a shadowy entity, their faces contorted in fear and pain. The figure in the carvings bore an unsettling resemblance to the mask.
Theo noticed his expression. "What is it?"
"This place…" Caleb said, his voice trembling. "It's tied to the mask. The people here they must have created it."
Before Theo could respond, the ground beneath them began to shake. The crimson light of the Blood Seal grew brighter, and a low, guttural growl echoed through the chamber.
Theo drew his knife. "I knew this was too easy."
From the shadows emerged a massive, nightmarish creature. Its body was a shifting mass of flesh and bone, its eyes glowing like molten fire. The air around it seemed to warp, and its presence filled the room with a suffocating dread.
The creature roared, its voice shaking the walls, and lunged toward them.
Caleb barely had time to react. He raised the Heart of Ember, its light flaring brightly, and a barrier of fire sprang up between them and the creature. The beast recoiled, but it quickly recovered, circling them like a predator.
"We can't fight that thing," Theo said, his voice tight with panic.
"We don't have a choice," Caleb replied, pulling the mask from his bag. He hesitated, the weight of the decision pressing down on him. The mask had already taken so much from him his strength, his will. But without it, they wouldn't stand a chance.
"Caleb, no!" Theo shouted, but it was too late.
Caleb pressed the mask to his face, and the familiar surge of power coursed through him. The whispers became a roar, drowning out his thoughts, but he forced himself to focus. Tendrils of shadow erupted from his hands, striking the creature and forcing it back.
The battle was chaotic, a blur of fire, shadow, and blood. The creature was relentless, its attacks tearing through the temple as it fought to protect the Blood Seal. Caleb could feel the mask draining him, its hunger insatiable, but he pushed forward, each strike weakening the beast.
Finally, with one last burst of energy, Caleb drove a blade of shadow into the creature's core. It let out a deafening scream, its body dissolving into ash. The Blood Seal's light dimmed, and the temple fell silent.
Caleb staggered back, pulling the mask from his face. His vision blurred, and his body felt like it was on the verge of collapse. Theo caught him before he fell, his expression a mix of relief and anger.
"You can't keep doing this," Theo said. "The mask is killing you."
"I know," Caleb said weakly. "But it's the only way."
Theo helped him to the altar, where the Blood Seal rested. Caleb reached out and picked it up. The orb was cold to the touch, and its energy pulsed faintly, syncing with the beat of his heart.
As they left the temple, Caleb couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed. The mask's whispers were quieter, but they carried a sense of satisfaction as though it had gotten exactly what it wanted.
And in the ruins of Klynos, something ancient stirred, its slumber disrupted by their actions.
