Ash: A Pokémon Tale

Chapter 38: Lighthouse and Gengar

Misty arrived moments later, her face flushed crimson and her hair slightly disheveled. Brock raised an eyebrow, clearly concerned. "Misty, are you okay? You look all red."

Misty hesitated, stammering as she tried to find the right words. Finally, she jabbed a finger in Ash's direction and blurted, "It's all his fault!" Her face grew even redder as she stormed off to sit down, leaving everyone baffled.

Brock turned to Ash, his expression filled with curiosity. "What did you do this time?"

Ash shrugged casually. "Nothing much. The night's a bit cold, that's all."

Brock blinked, trying to decipher Ash's cryptic answer. After a moment, he just shook his head. "Whatever you say."

Deciding to move on, he clapped his hands together. "Alright, let's eat. Breakfast is getting cold."

The group gathered for the meal, sharing it with their Pokémon and Bill. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed as they enjoyed the food and each other's company.

Once breakfast was done, they settled in to wait for Bill to finish his preparations.

By midnight, Bill's voice suddenly broke the silence. "It's coming!" he shouted, bolting toward the top of the lighthouse.

Startled, Brock jumped to his feet. "We should follow him!"

The others quickly followed, except for Misty and Ash.

Ash noticed Misty lingering behind and raised an eyebrow. "You coming?"

Misty nodded but kept close to him as they ascended the stairs.

When they reached the top, the group froze in awe. A massive Pokémon moved slowly across the horizon, its silhouette illuminated by the lighthouse's beam.

Misty's grip tightened on Ash's arm as she whispered, "What is that…?" Her voice trembled slightly.

Ash smirked, leaning closer to her ear. "You're not actually scared, are you?"

Caught off guard, Misty blushed and clicked her tongue in annoyance. "S-Shut up!" she muttered but made no move to let go of his arm.

Unbothered by their interaction, Bill pointed toward the colossal creature. "That's the mysterious Pokémon I've been talking about!"

Brock's jaw dropped. "How is it even possible for a Pokémon to be that big?"

Bill's voice brimmed with wonder. "That's what I've been trying to figure out. This Pokémon is a true enigma."

Ash stared at the giant figure, his mind racing. Is this was some kind of foreshadowing for Dynamax Pokémon? He quickly dismissed the thought. probably not

As they watched, the Pokémon slowly moved toward the ocean. Bill stepped forward, his voice desperate. "Wait! Please don't go!"

But the Pokémon disappeared beneath the waves, leaving an eerie stillness in its wake.

The group stood in silence for a moment before Brock sighed. "Well, that was… unexpected."

"More like unbelievable," Misty muttered, finally letting go of Ash's arm.

With nothing else to do, the group returned to the lighthouse to spend the night, each of them lost in their thoughts about the incredible sight they had just witnessed.

The group woke up early the next morning, feeling refreshed after their stay at the lighthouse. After thanking Bill for his hospitality, they packed their things and set off for Vermilion City.

As they walked along the path, Brock glanced at Ash. "So, what's your plan once we get to Vermilion City?"

Ash adjusted his cap and replied, "First, I need to take care of some business. After that, I'm challenging the Vermilion Gym."

Brock nodded thoughtfully. "So, we're staying in Vermilion for a few days?"

"Most likely," Ash confirmed.

Brock turned to Misty next. "What about you, Misty? Any plans?"

Misty shrugged. "Probably some shopping, maybe explore the town. It's been a while since we've been in a big city. I might even stop by the harbor to check out the water Pokémon."

The group continued their journey, enjoying the pleasant weather. By the afternoon, they finally arrived at Vermilion City, where the bustling streets and lively atmosphere greeted them with excitement.

Ash stopped and turned to his friends. "I'll catch up with you guys later," he said, adjusting his bag. Then he glanced at Pikachu, a glint of determination in his eyes. "Ready for an adventure, buddy?"

"Pika pi!" Pikachu exclaimed, its tail sparking with enthusiasm.

Brock nodded. "Alright, but don't go getting into trouble, okay?"

"Yeah, Ash," Misty added with a hint of concern. "Try not to do anything reckless."

Ash smirked. "Don't worry, I'll be fine." With a wave, he turned and headed off, Pikachu trotting at his side.

Brock watched him go before turning to Misty. "Let's head to the Pokémon Center and get settled."

"Good idea," Misty replied, and the two set off in the opposite direction.

Meanwhile, Ash wandered through Vermilion City's vibrant streets, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling crowds. After a while, he arrived at a vacant lot, one he recognized from his memories.

"This is it," Ash murmured, a nostalgic smile forming on his lips. "This is where Professor Cerise will set up his lab someday."

As he approached, he noticed two trainers—a boy and a girl—standing near the lot, talking to a Gengar. Intrigued, Ash stopped to watch from a distance.

The boy knelt down and gently patted the Gengar's head. "Gengar, stay here for now, okay? I'll come back for you soon."

"Gen-gar!" the Ghost Pokémon replied, its tone trusting and cheerful.

The girl tugged on the boy's arm impatiently. "Come on, we're going to be late!"

"Alright, alright," the boy said with a sigh before giving Gengar one last pat. "Wait for me, buddy."

The two trainers walked off, leaving Gengar behind. The Pokémon sat on the stairs of the vacant lot, practicing its moves as if passing the time.

Pikachu's cheeks sparked with irritation, its fur bristling as it growled. "Pika pii!"

Ash placed a calming hand on Pikachu's head. "I know, buddy. You want to give that guy a piece of your mind for leaving Gengar behind, but let's not."

Pikachu grumbled, its tail flicking in frustration. "Pika pi…"

After the trainers left, Ash stood silently for a moment, watching the Gengar who was still waiting patiently on the stairs.

He exchanged a glance with Pikachu before deciding to approach the Pokémon.

As Ash and Pikachu drew closer, Gengar noticed them and tilted its head curiously. "Gengar?" it said, its tone laced with confusion.

Ash sighed softly and sat down next to Gengar on the steps. Pikachu hopped up and sat beside him, its tail flicking back and forth.

Gengar blinked at them and asked, "Gen gengar?" as if questioning their intentions.

For a few moments, Ash remained silent, gazing at the horizon. Then, finally, he spoke. "You know… your trainer has abandoned you here."

Hearing this, Gengar immediately bristled, shaking its head fiercely. "Gengar gen gengar!" it exclaimed, clearly refusing to believe Ash's words.

Ash studied the Pokémon's reaction, his expression calm and understanding. He doesn't believe me, Ash thought to himself.

"I know you don't trust me," Ash said gently. "But let me prove it to you."

Gengar narrowed its eyes and replied, "Gengara," its tone accusing. Ash could tell the Ghost Pokémon was essentially saying, You're lying.

Ash stood up and dusted off his pants. "If you want to find out the truth, then hide in my shadow and follow me," he said firmly.

Pikachu nodded in agreement, adding, "Pika pi!"

Gengar hesitated, its glowing red eyes watching Ash closely. After a few moments, it nodded slowly and said, "Gengar…" before disappearing into Ash's shadow.

Ash glanced at the faint dark aura now hidden within his shadow and gave a small smile. "Good choice," he murmured, turning to Pikachu. "Let's go."

"Pika!" Pikachu chirped, hopping onto Ash's shoulder.

As Ash walked away, he thought to himself, Now Gengar doesn't have to wait for years in solitude, hoping for a trainer who won't come back. Determined to find the boy, Ash began his search, with Pikachu and Gengar by his side.

After searching around Vermilion Town for a few hours, Ash and Pikachu finally spotted the boy and girl near the coast. The two were sitting on a bench, talking casually, seemingly without a care in the world.

As Ash approached the boy and girl by the coast, he kept his composure, though Pikachu could feel his frustration. "Excuse me," he called out, his voice calm but firm.

The boy turned toward him, slightly annoyed. "Yeah? What do you want?"

Ash crossed his arms, meeting the boy's gaze evenly. "I saw you leave your Gengar at the vacant lot. Care to explain?"

The boy frowned, his tone defensive. "What's it to you?"

Ash's expression didn't waver. "It's everything to me when I see a Pokémon abandoned like that."

The girl beside the boy scoffed. "Oh, please. That Gengar is nothing but trouble."

Ash raised an eyebrow, glancing at Pikachu, who glared at the pair. "Trouble?" he repeated, his tone cold.

The boy sighed, clearly irritated. "Look, that Gengar is cursed. Ever since I caught him, I've been on a losing streak. It's like he's bad luck or something. So yeah, I left him. It's not like he was any use to me."

Pikachu growled angrily, sparks dancing on his cheeks. "Pika pika!"

Ash held up a hand to calm Pikachu, though his voice grew sharper. "Bad luck? Or maybe it's because you didn't take the time to understand him. A bond between a trainer and their Pokémon takes effort, not excuses."

The boy scoffed. "Yeah, well, I'm not wasting any more time on a lost cause."

At that moment, Gengar emerged from Ash's shadow, his red eyes glowing with a mix of hurt and fury. "Gengar!" he growled, his voice trembling.

The boy froze, recognizing the Pokémon. "H-hey! What's he doing here?"

Gengar stepped forward, his energy flaring. "Gen gengar!" he shouted, pointing an accusing finger at the boy. The betrayal in his voice was unmistakable.

The boy stumbled back, trying to defend himself. "It's not like that! I… I just thought he'd be better off without me!"

Ash stepped between them, his tone cutting. "Don't lie to yourself. You left him because you gave up. But Gengar deserves better than that."

Gengar's hands began to glow as he charged a Shadow Ball. The boy and girl yelped, backing away in fear. "Gengar!" Ash called out firmly, causing the Ghost Pokémon to pause.

Ash crouched down to Gengar's level, his voice softening. "You don't need to waste your energy on them. They're not worth it."

Gengar stared at Ash, his anger fading slightly. "Gengar…" he muttered, his tone uncertain.

Ash held out a hand. "Come with me. I'll never abandon you. I promise."

Gengar hesitated, his red eyes flickering between Ash and the boy who had abandoned him. Slowly, he turned away from the boy and looked at Ash. "Gengar…" he said quietly, nodding.

Ash smiled and pulled out an empty Poké Ball. "Welcome to the team, Gengar." He gently tapped the ball against Gengar, who willingly entered in a flash of light.

As the ball clicked shut, Pikachu cheered, "Pika pi!" and gave a little fist pump.

Ash stood up, tucking the Poké Ball into his belt. He glanced back at the boy and girl, his expression unreadable. "Pokémon aren't tools. They're partners. If you can't understand that, maybe you shouldn't be trainers."

With that, he turned and walked away, Pikachu perched proudly on his shoulder. "Come on, Pikachu. We've got a lot of training to do."

"Pikachu!" Pikachu agreed, his tail flicking with excitement.

As they headed back into the city, Ash felt a sense of pride. Gengar had found a new home—and Ash had gained a powerful new ally.
