Chapter 58: How noble of Fairy Tail
The evening's peace shattered in an instant.
A sudden gust of wind slammed the ballroom doors open, causing the grand chandeliers to sway ominously. Gasps and cries of alarm rippled through the crowd as an ominous figure strode into the room. The man was tall and cloaked in dark, tattered robes, his face obscured by the hood that cast shadows across his features. His hands glowed faintly with dark energy, tendrils of magic twisting and writhing like living shadows around him.
The music stopped abruptly, and the guests scrambled to the edges of the room, murmuring in fear.
"Princess Amélie," the man growled, his voice low and rasping. "Your family has taken much from me. Tonight, I take something in return."
Amélie froze, her emerald eyes wide with terror. Yukari immediately stepped in front of her, her body instinctively moving into a defensive stance.
"Stay back," Yukari ordered, her voice steady. "You're not laying a finger on her."
The man's lips curled into a sinister smirk. "And who are you to stop me? A child in borrowed finery?"
Yukari didn't flinch, but beside her, Mirajane's expression darkened. Her usual teasing demeanor was gone, replaced with cold focus.
"You'll regret underestimating us," Mirajane said, her voice a low growl.
The man chuckled, lifting his hands. "Let's see if you can back up that bravado."
Without warning, he launched a barrage of shadowy projectiles toward them. Yukari reacted instantly, summoning a swirling wall of golden flames to intercept the attack. The fire hissed as it collided with the dark magic, the two forces dissipating in a shower of sparks.
"Mirajane, keep him busy!" Yukari shouted, her violet eyes blazing as she stepped forward.
Mirajane smirked. "Gladly."
In a flash, Mirajane's body glowed with a brilliant light, her form shifting as she activated her Satan Soul. Her features became sharper, more demonic, with curved horns sprouting from her head and black, leathery wings unfolding from her back. Her aura surged with power, the air around her vibrating with intensity.
"You messed with the wrong guild," Mirajane snarled, her voice reverberating with otherworldly power.
The intruder's confidence wavered for a split second before Mirajane lunged at him with blinding speed. Her claws, crackling with dark energy, slashed through the air as the man barely managed to dodge, his robes whipping violently in the wake of her attack.
Yukari didn't waste the opportunity. With a quick motion, she raised her hand, summoning the Flame of the Dawn. Golden fire roared to life, coiling around her like a living serpent. She launched a concentrated blast of flames at the man, forcing him to retreat further.
"You're persistent," the man hissed, summoning a dark barrier to shield himself. "But persistence means nothing without strength!"
With a sharp motion, he extended his arms, and the shadows in the room seemed to come alive. Tendrils of darkness erupted from the floor, lashing out at Yukari and Mirajane like hungry beasts.
Mirajane twisted in midair, her wings propelling her upward as she evaded the attack. She countered with a powerful strike, her Soul Extinction technique sending a wave of destructive energy crashing toward the man. The impact shattered his barrier, and he stumbled back, his hood falling to reveal a gaunt, pale face twisted with fury.
Yukari, meanwhile, weaved through the chaos, her flames cutting through the tendrils as she closed the distance between herself and the intruder. Her muscles tensed as she prepared her next move.
"Infernal Strike!" she shouted, leaping into the air and bringing her flame-wreathed fist down toward the man.
He raised his arms to block, a shield of shadows forming just in time. The impact sent shockwaves rippling through the room, knocking over tables and rattling the chandeliers. Guests screamed and clung to each other as the battle raged on.
"Stay calm!" Yukari shouted over her shoulder. "We've got this!"
The man growled, his eyes narrowing as he glanced between Yukari and Mirajane. "Two against one? How noble of Fairy Tail."
"You're welcome to bring reinforcements," Mirajane shot back, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "It might make this more of a challenge."
The man sneered and clapped his hands together. The shadows around him surged, condensing into a massive, monstrous form that loomed over the ballroom. Its glowing red eyes fixated on Yukari and Mirajane, and it let out a guttural roar that made the floor vibrate.
"I don't need reinforcements," the man declared. "I am the reinforcements."
Yukari gritted her teeth, her flames burning brighter. "Big monster or not, you're going down."
"Let's take him out together," Mirajane said, landing beside Yukari and flexing her claws.
Yukari nodded. "Try to keep up."
The two launched themselves at the shadowy beast, their attacks synchronized in a way that surprised even them. Yukari's flames illuminated the dark creature, exposing its weak points, while Mirajane's brute strength and agility allowed her to exploit those openings with devastating precision.
The beast swung a massive arm at them, but Yukari created a flaming barrier, buying Mirajane enough time to dive beneath it and deliver a powerful uppercut. The creature howled, rearing back as cracks of light began to spread across its form.
"You're losing," Yukari taunted, her voice steady despite the sweat dripping down her brow.
The man scowled, his hands trembling as he struggled to maintain control over the beast. "You think this is over?" he spat.
He slammed his hands into the ground, and the shadows surged again, filling the room with an oppressive darkness. For a moment, Yukari and Mirajane could see nothing but black.
"Stay close!" Yukari called out, her voice sharp.
"I'm right here," Mirajane replied, her tone calm despite the situation.
The darkness began to shift, forming dozens of shadowy figures that surrounded them. Each one had glowing red eyes and claws that dripped with malevolent energy.
"Great," Yukari muttered. "More friends."
"Let's make this quick," Mirajane said, cracking her knuckles.
"Right," Yukari agreed, summoning her flames once more. "I'll light them up, and you take them down."
With that, they launched into action again, their movements fluid and complementary. Yukari's flames lit up the room, creating pockets of light where Mirajane could strike with precision. The two worked together seamlessly, their attacks devastating the shadowy figures one by one.
But the man in the center of it all merely smirked, his confidence unshaken. "Let's see how long you can keep this up," he said, his voice echoing ominously.
Despite their efforts, the oppressive darkness continued to grow, and the battle showed no signs of ending.
